A few final thoughts--Alto I like my paint choice, I would not go with yellow again as it has no coverage and every nick shows. I think this is around 4 times harder to build than a Zig Zag. Your assiant MUST be skinny to fit. This would have been a easer build had I not gone with the very thin wood and make it fold down (but it is light and will fit in my car). This is a home made illusion and I would rate in in the midle, could have been better but could have been a lot worse.

Dude ... I don't know who you are, but you're like the MacGyver of magic! I just happened to stumble across this post, and it was awesome to see your project from start to finish. This is a very ambitious illusion to attempt ... especially without a full workshop.
This illusion obviously wasn't designed to fold flat ... so, you had your work cut out for you. There were a few built by Owen Redwine, where the top box folded flat and it all fit in one case with the bottom half solid. I personally own one of the very first Modern Art props built by Owen back around 1997. There is a lot of labor involved in building this one the right way. I wouldn't trade mine for the world. Excellent work, my friend, and thanks for sharing your experience with us all ... Steve |

Thinking of cutting out a pattern for a one person (bigger) Modern Art Illusion with a thin table. These are the only pictures I could find on the web: http://s177.photobucket.com/albums/w221/......llusion/
I was thinking of keeping the height the same and adding 4 inches to the width and sides and 1/2 inch to the table legs. I do think mine will be different, as I want to use a Zig Zag position of the person, not a Modern Art position (because of this, only one foot would show). What do you think ??? |

I think that using one person dilutes the effect of Modern Art. Also, I think that not enough people emphasize the sword, and some of the effect is lost.

Contact John Measner at http://www.jmmagic.com He uses one like that.
Here is also a link to a YouTube video: http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn72L-DN6_I&feature=related I don't have my Modern Art book with me right now, but the photos remind me of one of Jim Steinmeyer's early iterations of the illusion. Strangely, I don't hate the armholes on the sides of the illusion. You need to experiment with changing the dimensions. I'm not sure that adding 4 inches to the table width without making a comparable change in the other dimensions will work. Normally, I would suggest building a cardboard mockup, but I'm afraid that cardboard wouldn't be sturdy enough to build a mockup of this.

Thanks, Clinton, for the info.
This is my drawings of the prop + 4 inches to the table and 4 inches to the box + 1/2 inch to the table legs. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w221/......lus4.jpg and http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w221/......lus4.jpg Also, I THINK I am going with a more Zig Zag Picture on the front, and I think I am cutting the pattern out of cheap plywood. |

This is my very rough thoughts on the art work. I am going with a more Zig Zag unisex picture. I changed the foot hole to a higher, more Zig Zag position. Also, I changed the hand hole to a higher, more Zig Zag position.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w221/......tred.jpg What are your thoughts???? |

Does anyone use the Zig Zag position in Modern Art? (I don't think so, as I can see both feet in all the ones I see on the Internet.)

Is there any interest in me continuing this thread?? I seem to be the only one posting. I am going to build a one man MA, but if there is no interest, I won't take my time to post.

I suggest starting a separate thread if you are starting a new project.
I would be interested in seeing your progress. If I had the time or the space to work on something, I would post pictures of it...
