Common knowledge sponges with holes in them hold more water in the hole than without.

I think the hole punch is the most intelligent, and efficient solution. Freezing it is dangerous and unpredictable. Plus, how are you going to hold the frozen ball, plus it might not freeze through consistently.
The hole punch looks like it did an AMAZING job. Custom hole punches are easy to find with the recent scrapbooking craze/boom. Get a paper punch of sorts. J |

The punch will work if you want the hole all the way through, but the frozen ball drilled with give you a hole as a resevoir.
