Our friend and toughtful contributor here on the Café has come up with an extremely interesting booklet on the Matrix effect: Great Scott's Matrix Routine
For the ones who may not know him, Great Scott is a real worker in real life, a true performer of really refined yet simple looking magic, but also a real thinker and very creative mind: one of the best balance between both worlds. His latest work came to me as a surprise: I thought "who would need another take at the matrix effect"? I thought that I knew everything about it. I know that the Schneider/Dingle Pick up move was published in Jules Dhotel's mammoth work before both of these "inventors" were even born. I know about matrix and reverse matrix, about coins, about cards, about gimmicks, about magnets and shimmed coins or shimmed cards, I know about... Yet I discovered very interesting concepts in Great Scott's work which were new or had been lost, scattered in many places (books and/or DVDs). Just as an example, there is a focus on the diamond formation (which has technical implications). This doesn't seem much to some but why should the coins gather to the upper left corner? Are the spectators on our left holders of some kind of privilege? Isn't it better showmanship to bring the coins to the center near the audience? What does it change? Read the book! Ever since Paul Gertner came up with the concept of reverse matrix, many variations came forward, practical or not, deceptive or not... Great Scott has produced another synthetic work that gets away with the unnecessary and still remains concerned with the aesthetics of the finale. Even though most routines in the book are done with the regular material, there is even a reworked routine for the Timothy Wenk gimmick, that is far better that the original routine which, when it came out, did create nothing less than a sensation. The patter of the routine is much better than 99,9% of the matrix routines that I have seen in fifty years. Great Scott excels here as well: casual, humorous at some stages in the routine, meaningful... I have no financial interest in this but I would strongly recommend, not so much to buy the booklet than to study it with an open mind. The probability that your own routine will not gain from this reading is just zero (and I know a bit about coin work and card work)... Now for younger magicians who don't know well about the Matrix routine, don't search further: this book supplies what you need Finally for the ones who "prefer" this or that take on the routine (generally for lack of knowledge of the finesse and subtleties brought in the effect over the years and pride over their sub standard achievements), buy this. We cannot be better than a real intelligent worker with audience tested mileage when he gets generouswith hsi experience.
