My wishes are selfish. For 2010 to be the year I do my first public show and that the Café create a board for readers.
I'm selling my hardcover autographed limited edition copy of Jerome Finley's "Thought Veil"
PM me for info. |

Iain,
Gottcha now and understand your desire. However, your wish is probably the most difficult. A quick look of thread in the café will show that mentalists can’t agree and are willing to go to fisticuffs over: Playing cards or not in a performance. The type of props used in a mentalism show. Whether there can be “Comedy Mentalism”. The use of Smash and Stab in a show. The scope of ethics with regard to your audience. Stealing or borrowing material. Proper crediting of material. The use of disclaimers. What is or is not mentalism. And even in this very thread, the use of predictions. It is one thing to disagree with regards to your own feelings about these things; what surprises me is that many people here in the café feel that there is no other alternative except for their views. Really!! Come on . . . Just because you don’t like something does not mean it is not Mentalism or good for a mentalism show. I try to be very careful with I make an evaluation because I have discovered that sometimes I am wrong. You have to step back and see how the other person uses his ideas. I don’t know the context, character, or premise the other individual is using, so for me to single handedly say he or she is wrong for using something that I wouldn’t is . . . ridiculous. More than once (especially in my younger years) I would think, “That’s not going to work”. But then I see how the person used it in their show. I see how the audience reacted to the piece and suddenly I notice how jaded my viewpoint was. We all see the world through a small slice called our perspective. We have to be a little more open to ideas. I would rather collaborate with someone than argue with them that I am right and they are wrong. There have been times I have not agreed with a certain idea but I will still work with my friend to perform it the best way he can. Heck, I might be wrong . . And if I am right, well then we still learn something. There is a way to disagree without being disagreeable. And You can still help someone even if you don’t really think it is going to work. This is how we all learn. Sometimes we learn the easy way and sometimes we learn the hard way. I generally do not hang out on the café because too many people are too quick to judge ideas, concepts, and performances without even looking at them. Too many armchair mentalists have soured the milk of collaboration, sharing, and creativity here in the café. Iain, I hope you get your wish . . . but I wouldn’t count on it.

Although I agree with you to a point. Sometimes we can over kill things and a prediction on top of all the things we did previously can weaken things. I don't like it either. However a prediction of part of the show could work. But not everything. |
