I always shake the hand of my child volunteers to welcome them to the stage. My wife saw my show the other day and gave me the tip to stop that immediately as many schools and even businesses are stopping the practice due to H1N1 concerns. Even children may feel awkward since they are being taught flu prevention strategies as school etc.
Have you changed your perspective or have a particular policy on shaking hands with children during these H1N1 times? Perhaps the answers will vary depending upon how your region is dealing with the threat and prevention measures. |

Yes, I have changed a few things about what I do to stay safe and to also show by example as well. You are right in that most kids are being taught ways to keep safe during the flu season. I also keep with me small bottles of the antibacterial lotion. I have it in my table and I use that before and after shows and also take extra effort to wash my hands etc. It is just some simple steps to keep yourself healthy and others in the process.

If it fits your character, you can use hand sanitizer as a gag in several ways.

I think this is taking it too far. It just makes people more paranoid than what they already are.

I try to remember the saying "the only thing to fear is fear itself." There will always be the latest, greatest deadly horrible thing in the world. I think the whole thing is overhyped IMHO.
However, I just had a mom book me because of H1N1 concerns. She said her child usually liked to go to an indoor Inflatable Playground but she was concerned with all the kids and germs and feared H1N1. So she opted for a more intimate gathering at home with a magic show. So, there are 2 issues: your personal health concerns and the perception from the worried parents, etc. Chris Capehart gives the kids a baby wipe after they pet the bunny. Nothing to do with H1N1 and though bunnies don't carry disease, he knows that it puts the adults at ease. |

I do not think it is paranoid at all. it is simply being conscious of things around you and being properly prepared. it is about taking care of yourself and also being respectful of others.
no one is saying to bring a kid up, ignore them, show no appreciation and spray each kid down with Lysol and wrap them in bubble wrap. lol It simply means taking some preacautions to keep yourself healthy as well as others aroudn you. By simply washing your hands or keeping a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your vehicle is just common sense and good practice. This also makes you look professional and show the client that you care. Kyle

If I was a teacher, I'd have more respect that an entertainer can take a situation like this turn it into a comedy routine or running gag with the hand sanitizer.
It would be a nice touch. One word of warning, this stuff can harm your rabbit, so if you plan to handle a rabbit, do so before you use the sanitizer. (I heard this a while ago but unwilling to risk the loss of my rabbit by testing it's validity.)

It is paranoid. H1N1 can easily spread through the air, so an intimate home gathering is no safer than an indoor playground. On that same note, you shouldn't dispense with proper polite greetings because of that same fear.
That said, if you are hired and you know it is precisely because of this fear, it's probably a good idea to adapt. Background: I travel on a crowded bus on a daily basis in a high risk area. Lots of internation students and travellers. I have yet to catch anything. Also, remember, that H1N1 is actually no more dangerous than the flu epidemic we have every year. All those extra precautions and the 3,4 million vaccins bought by the Dutch government are all a result of paranoia because one virologist predicted 1/3 of the population would be affected. Thirdly, exposing kids to viruses and bacteria can actually be better than keeping them locked in Lysol-laced bubblewrap. It strengthens their immune system so they can fight off pathogens better later in life. |

I'm not so concerned about myself. I do wash or sanitize after every performance. It's the social implications. Social norms may be changing.
For an example on what kids are being taught: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNHeV-9dPCs. I understand this aired this morning in my market. Jim Henson and PBS are telling kids to get the flu shot! Persuasion at its best! |

I like the idea of using hand sanitizer as a gag, especially because it will be reassuring to parents. I think the benefits of having clean hands when shaking hands with children is obvious anyway.
However, I personally feel that the over-use of anti-bacterial soaps, lotions, etc can cause problems. The labels say it kills 99.9% of bacteria. It's the 0.1% which survive that concern me. They have developed an "immunity" to the sanitizer, so their offspring are more likely to have that same attribute, thus creating "superbugs" that are going to be a lot more difficult to deal with in the future. I think standard soap and handwashing, combined with the normal human immune system, should be enough protection. It seems people have lost confidence in the ability of immune systems to fight diseases. |

Puts me in mind of George Carlin talking about swimming in raw sewage as a child. When polio came through, kids in the surrounding towns were getting sick. But not us 'cause we swam in raw sewage! That polio didn't have a chance!
You're absolutely right, MrGreggy. Let's not forget what the immune system is for! |

Scott:
It’s odd Scott that no one answered your original question, and it was a good one. It was: “Have you changed your perspective or have a particular policy on shaking hands with children during these H1N1 times?” Kyle, sort of switched the question to hand sanitizers. The answer, from me, to your original question, I always shake their hand (unless they seem to pull away.) I often perform in a medical environment and hand shaking is a normal social gesture that has not diminished in this flu scare. Doctors and staff are washing and sanitizing a bit more, but no one there is stopping to put gloves on before shaking a child’s hand or adding more worry to children that they now carry. I think Jay Ward and Keeblem have it right. I would make sure may hands were clean when I start a school show, and teachers can make sure their kids keep washing their hands more than usual. Bob |

Hand sanitizer also kills the good bacteria that we need to stay healthy. Many of the products that we buy, including processed food, lowers the immune system. I eat well, take the appropriate supplements to my diet and took myself off of my prescriptions, years ago - now, I'm in great health! I take precautions, like washing the sponge balls and my hands. But there's a lot of bad information out there, some of which is coming from what most people think are reputable sources.

Many strong opinions here filled with medical "information". I feel obliged to remind those who seem so convicted about their beliefs on this subject and innoculations that they are not doctors ! It is risky for a children's entertainer to go around spouting medical advice, unless they have a degree and/or practice to back up their claims.
Sure, most everyone is probably right about the overkill of antibacterial this and that, but the bottom line is appearance is everything in our business. If one appears to be vigilent about protecting the children from illness, it makes one look more trustworthy and reliable, regardless of what one's personal feelings may be. As for myself, after losing my first child to menningits (before they had developed the vaccine), my wife and I adopted a motto for our son that we see MANY parents follow...TAKE NO CHANCES ! Oh, and try to get medical advice from someplace other than the Magic Café.... :) Mark
