I am helping a ministry called Neighborhood Bible Time for the summer. They hire 50 Bible College students as evangelists to hold week long youth crusades. They work with children and teenagers. The program is over 50 years old and a lot of their tricks are very old. The executive director wants me to update the tricks for next year. Most of the men have little or no ability in sleight of hand so simple is good. They have effectively used illusions like the Foo Can and the change bag for years. That is just two examples to help get our minds going. They don't all have to have gospel applications. Some of them are just attention getters. Also, purchasing 50 of anything will get quite expensive so we are not looking for stuff that costs big bucks. Also, they must be able to hold up traveling in a suitcase for each summer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, FC |

HI,
You might consider the old stretching boomerang trick. If you like I can email you some templates of fishes for this trick. With this version you notice one is bigger than the other so you cut one shorter but now the other is longer and you keep going until there is nothing left! Phillip |

You might want to try my Top Banana routine that appeared in the Linking Ring magazine (the magician confuses the word "bandanna" with "banana" and end up folding and cutting a "banana"! Kids love it!). You only need a TT a silk and a fresh banana each time. If you are interested, e-mail me and I'll send it to you. |

You might consider balloon sculptures. Lots of possibilities for attention getting, "secular" and gospel applications. Maybe someone like T Myers or LaRocks can help get 50 "outfits" together.
There is also stuff you can do with neon balloons and blacklights, if the equipment is available. Hope this helps. peace phill

How about Prof. Nightmare? It's not too difficult and has a couple of obvious gospel applications (even though we are all different God loves us all the same and we become like the people we get close to [bad company corrupts good character]). Not only that but it plays well to boot!

I would suggest getting a copy of the Mark Wilson Couse In Magic. It is a very well illustrated book and covers all areas from close-up to stage including gimmicked effects, as well as easy sleight of hand and impromptu tricks. You should be able to order it from any decent book store, magic shop or online store such as Amazon.

FC; Rope is cheap and besides the Prof. Nightmare application already mentioned, there are several other rope tricks that can be adapted to a Christian theme.
In the Mark Wilson book mentioned by Shawn there is a Triple Rope Trick that is perfect for an illustration of the Trinity. You will have to apply color to the rope, but that is not that difficult. I use green for the Creator (Father), red for the Son, and white for the Holy Spirit. You have three seperate ropes of different colors representing the three distinct characters of the Trininty, tie them together, remove the knots and display a single rope with three distinct bands of color, but still One Rope (One God). I have gimmicked a set so that the rope will join into a circle, also representing no beginning and no end.

The old Afgan Bands done with rolls of adding machine tape can work. Use a theme of endless possibilities or paths leading to differing results. Cheap yet effective.

I will have to second the rope suggestions and the Afghan Bands. Before I started doing kids shows on a regular basis, I would occasionally get asked to perform for local scout/church groups. Simple rope tricks like the trinity ropes that Doug mentioned, or a simple cut and restored are great. The Afghan Bands are a great way to get audience participation as well. If you get volunteers up to help you can then divide the rest of the group into 3 sections and give them a goofy cheer to chant while the race is on! (Like "OH |insert name here| your just a nut, your just a nut so make the cut" etc).
Like others have said, check out the Mark Wilson course as it has a ton of great tricks that can be done cheaply, and also by the beginner magician.

Can I find Afghan bands in Mark Wilson's book? What is the basic effect?

Yes, I am pretty sure the bands are in Mark Wilson? someone else may be able to confirm.
If you want an explanation go here I think the method is common enough that if you want to know how it is done you can PM me for details, Chris.

With the adding machine tape you can make mouth coils too......torn and restored to mouth coils....not in mouth though.
