If you are performing to children aged under 5 then a good run rabbit run and a colouring book will go a long way. Part of the reason they are quite good for this age group is that you can perform them straight without having to tell jokes or be funny yourself.
For older children I dunno if there is one surefire hit for all groups of kids but I think the older the children the more important the comedy elements become. Of course the type of humour that works best for different performers and differnet groups of children will vary.

I have to say there is no "The best" trick for kids. It all about presentation. Everyone style is different.
Sucker style trick are a natural for kids though! Just can't pick one best... Oh yea! Anything with animals is always really big with kids!

The best? That's tough. But I've found the Hippity Hop Rabbits is right there at the top of the list. Not only is it extremley fun for the kids, it's extremley fun for me to perform as well.
Other notables include the colouring book with a break-away wand, professor's nightmare, the pom-pom stick and silk-coloa. I use a change bag with this one. I have the youngster place the silk inside the bag, then hold it out in front of them with one hand. It's their job to keep me from sticking my hand inside the bag and grabbing the silk. The amount of laughs and screams I get from this are incredible. And when they discover the silk has indeed vanished and reappeared inside the coke bottle there is nothing but silence. Oh, and for schools, there's nothing like a guillotine to get everyone excited. Especially if you get their principle to come up for that one. |

The easiest trick that goes over great with the kids and their parents is....The Vanishing Bandana, but you have to have a tape player. Thanks, Marty

Chinese Washing Machine - first little girl to ever turn the handle on ours must now be about 28! Socks become full of holes - knit together into one - become babies socks etc. The handle on top of the machine makes an awful noise! Loads of 'business' with misplacing apron (pinafore) over girls head/wrong way round/round ankles etc. Also Dippy Duck type routines. Duck in house - vanishes! cat in place!! make cat disappear!!! now there's an egg in the house!!!! Guess who's in it? Loads of business.

Pop up wand is still a big hit in my show. Children go crazy and laugh without pause. One of the greatest items I've ever purchased.

Hello to All and A Very Happy New Year!!!!
May 2003 be your most healthy and prosperous year!!!! As always there is a wealth of info on Best Kids Effect Ever. I have a question. I recently purchased a Mr. Thumbs Clatter Box manufactured by Jimmy King circa 1990. I'd like to develop a routine with it, however either I'm getting a little dyslexic or I may be missing a part. If anyone has any knowledge of this box any help would be greatly appreciated. You can PM me at your convenience. Thanks Again. Vincent |

If you have mis made flag you can use it for that. If you don't have mis made flag, get it! It gets a great response for me. Josh
If a magician is not intending to "trick" a spectator, why is every "trick" called a magic "trick"?

I'm repeating what's already been said, but anything done with animals...in particular, the Rabbit Shower routine was the strongest thing I'd ever done for the under 9's. If anyone needs proof as to how strong this is, get a copy of David Ginn's School Show tapes, volume 1, and listen to the kids go absolutely nuts when the rabbit appears. You can't even hear Ginn speak, and he's using a mike!

Not the best ever, but at the moment am getting a lot of response and tremendous intense interest - even from 4's - on Jack Hughes' "Giant and Dwarf". I feel this is partly because I am using the old 'poetry' script for it.

Hi Ken:
I've seen the Instant Magician routine advertised and have thought it to be very clever. There's one thing that's stopped me from ever doing it: You have to get very close physically to the child. Plus, you have to get behind him or her. I think you know where I'm going. Does this ever get any comments from adults...or have you had any problems (at all). I would love to do this effect/routine, but am very afraid of being accused of acting "inappropriate" toward a child. Just curious about your experiences; apparantly, they're very positive. Thanks. YEa i have been doing the routine for 10 years now and I have never had one person say anything to me about it. I have taken it out of my show a couple of times but people expect to see it. It has become a routine that people want to see and I have often gotten booked because of the routine.
The routine is in my last part of my show so the audience has gotten the chance to know me on stage. So by the time I do the effect there are NO concerns. I do not do the tux trick on ladies. I typically get men and sometimes older boys like 9 years or older. I sell a version of this that is a real tux with real tux shirt. Kevin sells one as well and I am on his video. His tux is a costume and it is not a real tux coat. Best, ken scott |

Ken, I bought Kevins before I knew you and after seeing your outfit, I would go with yours in a heart beat.
Yes, Instant Magician, especially the way you do it; the way it is done on your video is great. Favorite Trick of all times, Rabbit from Hat Miser's Dream Wiz Kote
