If so, what was it?

I heard that he used "The Zenda Waltz" at some point; this is what Thurston also used and is the background music on Cardini's act that was televised.

I also heard he was a fan of Marilyn Manson & used Personal Jesus for The water cell quite a bit. But seriously:
I'll hit up Jim Steinmeyer and see if he's got a playlist of sorts. . Give me a day or two. |

I have heard that his intro overture was the Pomp and Circumstance Marches.

He opened with Pomp and Circumstance according to his late neice, Marie Blood. JNeal is correct in that he used "Asleep in the Deep" for the cell or can.
I assume in 1927 when he did the magic segment of the big show that he used more music that other times. Most of those effects were done in a fast manner. Flight of Time, Girl to Orange tree, Vanishing and reappearing lamps (probably used 1812 overture to cover the noise on this one) Coin Ladder, were some of the features. I think a lot of his music was used to kill dead time during the act. Like when he was making an escape or such. Remember this was the era of live bands. Richard

Just a minor correction, but I believe he died in 1926 on Halloween.

You are absolutely correct. I should know this date. My son was born on Halloween in 1986. The 6 should have stuck in my mind.

As Richard says, the orchestra played at length during some of Houdini's escapes, as nothing was happening (visibly)onstage.
These days, audiences expect escapes to happen one heckuva lot faster than that, and wouldn't wait around. The world is wound up tighter and runs faster. -Philip |

Still, you've got to admire a showman who could keep the audience entranced for 15 minutes, looking at nothing but a small cabinet on an empty stage.

We forgot probably his favorite piece of music....Meet Me in Dreamland. Dreamland at Coney Island was were Bess and he met.
BTW, you can listen to many of these pieces on the internet on Limewire and other sites. And feel free to use the original music. Note I said the original music, not a recording of someone performing it. All classical pieces and other older music scores become common domain 75 years after the death of the writer. So if you like the piece, you find someone to record you a royalty free performance of it and you are set. Richard

Actually, because of the way the laws were modified, anything before 1923 is public domain. NOW it's the author's life plus 70 years...longer if the author is a corporation.

So, yeah...you're safe to use whatever music Houdini used!

But remember you must have it performed for you not a copy of a recording that someone did. For instance, Arthur Fiedler plays Bach will not work. But if you get the score, have it rercorded, you are fine.
