No but they sell insurance. It conveniently costs 3/4's of a maximum financial aid check per quarter and can even be deducted directly from your financial aid check, along with tech and parking fees.
They do have a food bank though, where I got most of my kids' diapers. The schools around here have a lot of good and helpful assistance programs. The only problem is being able to afford health care. Of course, I suppose it's my own fault for letting my job get outsourced.

Not having insurance is tough and not having a place to get diagnosed and dosed is probably contributing to the spread of H1N1.

I do like the wipes for the karts that the stores have now. That was done for MRSA's and not the H1N1, but it's good that it's there. I don't know about going overboard on antibacterial kids' toys and stuff, but wipes are good. People cough into their hands and put them all over the karts.
I'm rambling now.

But 10% of a school showing symptoms of H1N1 is also 10% showing symptoms of a head cold, strep throat or regular-old-boring-flu. No, I'm definitely not heartless. I'm just throwing out some perspective. Robert |

In the newspaper today, I read about one school for which half the kids are home due to flu-related (seasonal flu and H1N1 combined) illness. About drowning deaths ... a couple of decades ago, I can recall that there WERE some public awareness campaigns about this. Perhaps as a consequence, I believe drowning deaths per capita have since decreased significantly. In any case, I'm not convinced that comparing the risk of H1N1 to drowning is fair. Only a small portion of the population is exposed to any serious risk of drowning ... whereas nearly anyone is exposed to the risk of H1N1. A better comparison might be to tainted food products, or a case of (food or drug) product tampering. I'm sure you can recall cases of either in recent years. Cases in which only a handful of people were sick or died, yet that was enough to lead to nation wide public awareness campaigns and product recalls costing (at least) 10s of millions of dollars.

Just had my second Christmas cancellation here in the Vancouver area because of H1N1. People just don't want to host events where large groups of people are gathering. Not a big deal to me, since I had a 100% deposit on both of them, but still something to keep an eye on. Most contracts have clauses for sickness, war, natural disaster etc, which would mean that the client could reasonably argue that they don't have to pay if the reason for cancellation is H1N1.
On the bright side I now have two time slots open, so if I book them I'll be paid for two shows and only have to do one! Clinton

I'm a buyer for a large retailer and we were recently informed by our corporate office that we'll soon be given the ability to access our work desktops from home so that we can work from home "should it become necessary." Turns out that this unprecedented change in policy is part of a larger contingency plan to ensure that the we are able to manage the business should a widespread flu outbreak occur in any one of our regional offices. They're very concerned. Me, not yet.

I was told if we get the flu it is our own fault and we are expected to work.

Wow, that's harsh. I don't see how getting the flu can be ones own fault- unless someone's out licking on door knobs trying to get sick, lol. Uh, not that there's anything wrong with that...
I'm all for taking precautions, like sanitizing gel and antibacterial wipes. But I'm not wearing those hospital masks, they're just CREEPY. |

Almost harks back to the days of much larger infant mortality and child mortality rates.
All this from the same folks who have issues with teaching the theory of evolution at school yet missing out on the obvious moral questions of divine predestination in action as well as natural selection ... and the more refined question about what sort of traits come along with relative immunity to these bacterial and viral confrontations. If nothing else I hope folks learn to value life and treat each other as unique/precious and less casually dismissed as surplus, interchangeable and easily outsourced.

I really enjoy what I do, I really like my coworkers and manager, but as I said the company should be ashamed for what they do to employees and the fault falls mainly with the weak kneed union. As I also said, our CEO made it very clear that if they were going to spend money to bring the jobs back to the US, due to customer complaints about other countries, then he wasn't going to pay employees a competing wage or to provide good insurance. Well, that is a lie, the wages are in direct competition with the fast food industry and the insurance just below what part timers in retail get. Out of the 200 people hired this year over 40 have quit, in a bad job economy, and they expect to lose up to 100 before the first year in Reno ends. That is not a good turn over rate.
