More ballcocks of course but I thought you should know - just in case you are worried about the consequences.

Yet, the Catholic church is largely built on pagan religions. The image of the Madonna and Child was hijacked by the Catholic church, because so many folks already worshipped a goddess suckling a child - Astarte.
Perhaps the Catholics would prefer us to forget Hallowe'en, and instead remember some of the wonderful contributions to World History made by the Catholic Church - such as the Spanish Inquisition? ;) |

I was just in Salem Massachusetts on Sunday. You would have no problem doing a Halloween show there. The town thrives on this type of stuff. It was great.
As to the others, I have seen some churches advertising Halloween alternative nights. Things such as a games night or movie night at the church. Maybe you could still book a non-Halloween show with them? To each their own. |

I don't know what type of world you live in, but I have never had a Christian (Catholic or Evangelical) show up at one of my kid shows, specifically at Halloween (or any other time), to cause trouble. So, why the "warning"?
And, it's hardly a big secret that most Christian churches and groups have taken some sort of position on Halloween for many years. That position can vary. It's pretty common knowledge. What is the purpose of starting this thread, other than to start some sort of debate over religion, or to spread malice? - Donald

Halloween should be promoted to a full season -- we can get the extra time by shortening xmas

Donald dear thing, the warning was for those who may undertake the risky act of entertaining at Halloween events this weekend and the attitude of others which may, dependent upon your outlook, result in an invitation to Descend rather than Ascend which understandably may affect someone's outlook, the need for high earnings notwithstanding.
And Payne - I think you may be confusing me with some other of your bizarre circle of friends. I am neither a cannibal nor a crossdresser!

"I am neither a cannibal nor a crossdresser!"
I think it was a reference to the pope and other catholic priests, etc. ...robes and communion you know. BTW, Payne ...

Ah, how sad. I am Catholic. One of the things I appreciate about the Roman Catholic Church (at least in Fairbanks) is that we are not all hung up on fear of Halloween and things like that. Our church has an annual Halloween party and does not use alternative names like Fall Festival. It is all about having fun in a spooky (but not evil) way and giving kids candy.
It looks like it came from one of the priests in the Vatican, which does not mean it is from the Pope, nor does it mean that this carries the weight of doctrine or discipline within the RCC. I love Halloween because it is the one day of the year when we all, regardless of religion, race, creed, or favorite breath mint, will welcome anyone to the door and give freely in a spirit of what some would think of as proper Christian attitude. -Patrick |

If the Pope doesn't retract the statement, people will have to conclude that he's lost his mind. The church often denies the origins of their stories and practices, which are derived from a number of religions and myths.

I find it frustrating that so many Christians want to deny the pagan origins of certain feast days. One of the beauties of the early days of the Church was the ability to adapt to local culture. What matters isn't so much when we celebrate something, but why. For example, I don't celebrate Valentine's day anymore. My son was born on that day and we celebrate his birthday then. I normally pick a different day to celebrate my sweetheart. The early Church did the same sort of thing, picking a Christian subject to celebrate in place of the pagan holiday, though on the same day. My parish priest has never had a problem talking about this and rather delights in the Easter bonfire having its origins in a pagan practice. A symbol means what you want it to mean.
To bring this back toward the real subject instead of my digressions, perhaps this topic really points out a good marketing opportunity. Contact a local large church that often does Halloween alternatives and sell your show as a way to keep the kids there at the church instead of going out trick-or-treating. Compared to the rather lame games I've seen at some places, a good magic show (presumably generic, since you would be avoiding the spookiness aspect) would have kept me there for quite a while. And that means my kids would be there, too. Probably too late for bookings this year, but if you think ahead to next year, you can probably find a good way to sell your services in keeping kids at the church instead of spooking around the neighborhoods. How else can this story be turned into a profitable tip instead of an eye-roll about some dippy priest's pronouncement? -Patrick |
