Before everyone else jumps in with recommendations of books you should read, DVDs and YouTube vidios you should watch and props and effects you should buy, let me tell you the truth as few others will. I know that many will be quick to disagree with what I am about to say because they have a very different understanding of what "magicians helping magicians" means than I do. I think that "magicians helping magicians" is only part -- in fact, the LEAST IMPORTANT part -- of what forums like this SHOULD be about. The real objective should be "Magicians helping magicians IN ORDER TO HELP MAGIC!" From much of what I read on the Café, I fear that too many subscribers to forums like it -- and most who earn their living by marketing magic -- fail to understand (or admit) is that magic was not intended to be an evangelistic endeavor.
Before anything else (props, books, CD, DVDs) -- ANYTHING !! -- you should have built a STRONG FOUNDATION in magic. By "strong foundation" I mean YEARS of SERIOUS STUDY of the history of magic, MASTERY of the basic skills and techniques of magic (not just the moves/sleights and prop handling, but the psychology behind what makes magic "magic" and, perhaps most of all, effective "audience management"), the PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE that only comes after actually PERFORMING magic SUCCESSFULLY for people other than family and friend HUNDREDS (yes, I said hundreds, not dozens) of times, and watching and STUDYING every performance of magic -- live, on TV, anywhere -- you can. IMO then, and ONLY THEN, will you be ready to call yourself a magician (even as an avocation) let alone ready to undertake a study of mentalism that will prepare you to actually perform it. There is a reason why those who are -- or strive to be -- successful as mentalists refer to mentalism as "the most adult form of magic" and it's not because mentalism is really only suited to audiences who have reached a certain level of maturity and sophistication. Before you (and others) dismiss my comments as the ravings of a lunatic, ask yourself this question. "If I wanted to become a violinist, would my first step be to go on the Internet and ask some violinists which violin would be the best to buy, what music would be the best to play, and where should I go to buy them?" The answer is probably not. You would say that to be a violinist would take years of study and practice before one should even contemplate hiring out to perform at weddings or booking a hall and selling tickets to a concert. Why should magic or mentalism be any different? If the steps I've described sound like a lot of work and something that will take a long time -- you bet! If that sounds like more than you are willing to devote to the task, you might want to consider another hobby. I've been told that stamp collecting (I didn't say philately because some might mistakenly assume I was referring to oral sex) is both fun and educational.

Iain,
We both deserve a "high five" for getting that one past the moderators.
