I work with kids, and do some stuff for them depending on their age. Color changes, ect get the little ones, a pop up revelation for a DL... But what are the staples of kid card tricks? ( I am not a fan of gaffs )
Thanks

I don't know about staples, but here are a couple I have had good responses with. I have done Color Monte with kids of all ages from second grade up. Very good because they don't have to know the suits, just the colors Red and Blue.
I have also done the card through handkerchief from Mark Wilson's book. I did that for the same age range and I think the second graders were a lot more impressed by the penetration effect than by the correct card being there. I did create a presentation based on the handkerchief being my friend who finds the cards when I can't (twice I "failed" to find the correct card). Giving it a personality makes it more accessible to the younger kids and a bit more goofy for the older kids (who still like it, by the way). From working with these kids, I think any signed-card routine is going to work fairly well. They may not recognize the 3 of spades, but they sure do recognize their names! And sillier is better. Visual card changes work well because they are obviously magical. Try out a few of your faves on kids you know. My own kids can spot any but the best DLs and know something is up with my shuffles, even if they don't know what. I use them as my test group all the time. Poor kids. -Patrick |

Why bother about it? Do anything. It doesn't matter does it? They are only children. You can do absolutely anything you choose.
Why you should choose playing cards - as distinct from big picture cards - is totally beyond me. It has been proved to the satisfaction of most professional children's entertainers that just about everything you can do for children is preferable to playing card tricks. Children are not attracted to them, they don't follow them with an adult logic and there are thousands of far better things you can do. So why bother?

Here are some card tricks directly related to kids
General card magic for kids is not the best type of card magic. A routine that is designed for their age level is much better than a standard "Pick a Card, Lose a Card, Find a Card trick. There are probably a lot more Café topics related to this so if you are serious in doing card tricks for kids, then do a search.

This is non-playing card and gaffed, so it may be something you really don't want, but an excellent update to a 6-card repeat type effect that uses either Creative Magic's Flash Cards, or in jumbo, another style, is Max Krause's Magication. Spelling theme with magic. It's a good opener for certain kinds of shows, but if you're a walkaround guy, it could be a way to interest the kids as an opener, switch to regular card work for the adults, but likely keep the kids' attention because of it.

Try Wayne Dobson's FIVE. It's the only card trick using normal non-gaffed cards I'd consider doing with kids.
It's similar to six card repeat but you use real cards and they all end up on the floor. The kids love its speed and the mess you make. I saw it twice last Sunday in Felixstowe at the Ipswich Magical Society's "Beyond Belief" - once performed by Wayne Dobson (on dvd projected onto the big screen) then by Michael J Fitch who taught us how to do it. Everyone was laughing, which is a great start for any kids trick.

I find six card repeat and cards across work well. Both tricks rely on counting rather than remembering cards. In fact I often use the sort of soccer and pokemon cards that kids collect, instead of playing cards.

Magicbob (B. Robert Pulver) has some great non-card-trick-card-tricks in his "I Hate Card Tricks" books 1 and 2. The cards are used more like little people with which to recreate stage illusions, and kids do understand when (for example) a queen card is cut up and put back a different way that it is really mysterious how the queen card can now look all "mixed up." That's what happens in Magicbob's Mismade Queen and there are lots more little card illusions in his books just like it. His Books can be found on my site.
