Does anyone do flashy flourishes? I do. If you've seen Asher, Tudor or the Buck bros. Well, you know what kind of stuff I do. If anyone out there does, and would like to share ideas, let me know.

In answer to your question, I out of boredom, asked my table audience if they would like to see some fancy cuts from Las Vegas.
At that time I was working in a supper club in Mexico City. I was surprised to hear many times from this question, "yes". Then I would perform some fancy cuts followed by a one hand shuffle. This opens your audience to watching you do them instead of just starting showing off your skills. In other words, they WANTED to see the "fancy cuts". Best to you in our beloved craft. Tom Wolf

Thanks man, I do them just to show off. Sometimes I do it when someone says; "I can do that", while I explain to them, I look them right in the eye just for a second.
Then their eyes are on my hands and I explain to appreciate the work I put in to show them the effect. Then I get; "never mind, you must be pretty good to do some of, whatever you did" |

Some of the best new "eye candy" I have seen in years is from Brian Tudor. He has a four packet cut called "What the hell happened to Cybil", that is just a blur of cards and hands when you get it down.
It's on his first video called "Showoff". It can even be modified to a partial deck control. Very cool.

<--people's reactions to seeing crazy cuts and flourishes!
I do 'em all the time! I always have a deck of cards in my hands, so I'm always doing flourishes -- different flourishes like shooting a card from the deck & catching it, one-hand cuts, the Molecule, the West Coast Chaos, the Hollywood Speed Tip, plus more I've come up with or have been picked up from my magician friends who are into this as well. Your fingers don't have to be super long, but you need to develop your finger muscles. After the first day of pratcing some of these -for the first time- you're fingers hurt, but once you build up your finger muscles, future cuts and jazz don't strain your hands. Advice: Tylenol. Where can you find Brian Tudor's Show-Off?!?! I can only find Show-Off *2*!! The Bro.s' video is very cool too. Where else can I find MORE material?! (Daryl's Encyc of Card Sleights vol#8 has some 1handed cuts, I know) --Diavo

Haha get a Chin Na book and practice the exercises in it.
Man after the first day your thumb cant even move. See all the exercises are for the fingers. This is because you later in the training can be able to nerve pinch a blue whale to death. Wikiro

I remember first trying to learn Sybil...my fingers were so sore, but it was addictive, I had to keep practicing!
It was worth the practice, though.

Has Anyone heard of a young (college student?) out of Maryland by the name of Cap Casino? He does not do magic, he learned how to do card flurishes because his last name was CASINO and his friends thought it would be cool. If you have info on this guy PLEASE LET ME KNOW! (Yo Diavo, u know who this is!)

I am not a big fan of flourishes, but I do one sort of show-offy thing.
I talk about people always asking me about how long I practice, and how much time I spend with cards in my hands (which is a question I am often asked). I then explain that I spend much too much time with cards as I do a few one hand cuts, a 3 packet in hand cut, a 4 packet in hand cut. Then I explain that some people actually ask if it is possible to shuffle in one hand. I say it isn't....but so many people ask if I could, that I had to learn how (I know that last sentence is redundant, but it makes more sense in my patter). I end with a one hand shuffle. It is a little showy, but I don't think it detracts from other things too much because I explain that I learned to do these things from having cards in my hands so much. |

I learned and have performed the Harry Lorayne "One-hand Chopstick Cut" flourish from his book "Rim Shots" for more years than I care to remember. Performed quickly, cleanly, and repetitiously, this flourish is pretty impressive. Check out Lorayne's tape series for a glimpse of what it looks like.

I can do several fairly flashy cuts, but try to avoid doing them, as (usually) whatever attitude you approach someone with, flash cuts tend to distance the audience from you. I feel that fancy flourishes engender the feeling of "one-up-manship" so often associated with magic. Most people (I find) correctly surmise that I am "showing off", and this does not give me the feeling of audience enjoyment that I personally seek, it puts the audience on guard immediately, and can make you seem arrogant. I like "un-flashy" flourishes (like spinning a card on the tip of your finger etc) and tend to keep the flashy ones for personal use, and special occasions. Just my feelings on the matter. What do you think?

I do a one hand triple cut that leaves the deck in the original order. Yes a 3 pile 1 handed false cut. I also do a toss flourish/control. I fan half the deck and cut the other half in one hand. Half of that packet is laid on the fan and is tossed into the air. It does 1 complete revolution before being caught between the fan and remaining packet. This is one of my favorite card controls as well. I can control the card to either the top or the bottom with it.
