Catch of the day and mystery object. Looks like pewter but I think it's bronze. (diameter 188 mm)
16 skulls around a sun. I've the impression that the object is some kind of memorial about WWI but I ain't sure. Above each skull is inscribed the name of a country and numbers. |

Whoa!
Wonder If you spin it fast enough...if the skulls animate...like a Phenakistoscope. |

I'd put rock candy in it for when the kids visit.

I must look for "Beating Hearts Candies".
And the plate is darkened copper. The metal of Ares, God of War. |

Hmmm... I thought copper was associated with Venus/Aphrodite?
Iron is associated with Mars/Ares.

It actually reminds me a lot of Aztec art. The skulls and the sun and all.

Well, weren't some of the early Europeans who settled the new world during Aztec times Italians, or at least working with Italians?
Could work out a story about it being a special plate to hold the hearts cut out of the white invaders in offering to the Sun God. I don't know, just a thought. Probably kind of a dumb idea, but there it is.

What a lovely plate. Very interesting.
My guess (after some research!!)would be that this is a Tzompantli piece.A modern representation of an old Aztec ritual.Tzompantli means "wall/rack of skulls" in classical Nahuatl.A skull wall is where the skulls of the sacrificial victims of war were displayed. Often the skulls would be threaded together via a hole in the frontal/top of skull. A sort of warfare memorial. This would be the link to WW1. Quite why the writing is in Italian I do not know but quite a few Italian adventurers did indeed go to the new world following up on the conquistadors in the second wave. I hope this helps a little. |

That would be cool. I always find secret societies intriguing. I remember on a tv show that a British vampire mentioned he had killed a slayer in the boxer rebellion. Another slayer got cursed with her soul and starting speaking in Chinese. I always thought that was interesting, probably because we don't hear many boxer rebellion stories.
