Just curious...
I'm normally a pretty upbeat guy, but like everyone I have my days where I'm just not in the best of spirits. But when the curtain calls, I'm out there doing my best to give the kids and family a great, fun time. I've noticed... that even on days when I'm not all that jolly, by the time I've done 1, 2, 3 or more shows, I'm actually back in my normal cheerful mood. Is this just the result of busting your tail and having endorphins kick in, or is there something about performing and making kids laugh that helps turn Mr. Grumpy into Sammy Sunshine? Anyone else experience this too? --Jack

I remember a time about 5 years ago when I was very down, and thinking out the loss of my grandmother. I didn't announce what I was going through to my customer or my audience, and I did my best to deliver the same high quality service I always do.
I did a show for a child's birthday and it had such an impact on me as well as the kids. - Donald

It may be biochemical - it may also be the sheer pleasure of cutting loose and having fun with the wee ones. Whatever the case, I experience it often. I suffer from lower back pain...and yet, I can zoom through show after show and feel nothing. Whatever it is, I'll keep it!

The giggles and laughs make it worth it all. I can be in the worst of moods but when I hear that first laugh or that first smile it is an instant mood change for me.

I agree. I think it is one of the reasons I specialze in kids and families - the giggles and laughs.
I always feel better after. Lately dayscares and preschools have become my favorites because they just come in expecting to have fun, they join in with the make believe and it is almost like we just get to play together.

I absolutely start some of my days as Derrick the Cranky Magician and the shows seem to somehow always pull me out of those moods.
On the opposite side of the coin, I have to watch out that after a full day of performing, being up and having fun, that I don't come home and fall into a bit of a cloudy mood. I've always attributed it to a case of what goes up must come down? |

You might cheer up because you're performing; it could also be the infectious working of a kid's laugh. I found that I can't be grumpy in the presence of cheerful kids even when I'm not performing, so it could just be the effects kids have.

When my wife left I was in a bad way but she even said to me that when I perform there might be children there who are in the middle of some type of grief and I might be the highlight of their week. So I try and remember that when I perform.
Also at about the same time I did a show in Bristol and I remember sitting in the car in full wizards cosutme thinking "I don't want to do this" but as I got out of the car I saw all the kids at the window shouting the magicians coming the magicians coming". That lightend my heart so much and I realised how privileged we are to do our job. I now have a great time and love my job and my performances have gone from strenght to strenght.

It's hard to be down when a silver septre is going up your nose and the kids are screaming and laughing. Entertaining kids is a real joy and even after 15 years in the business I still thank my lucky stars after every show...well almost every show. 40 minutes of kids laughing and me fooling around...then happy parents and cuddles from the kids...you gotta feel better

Anytime that a performance goes well and the audience is participating and having fun it is a big lift. All of us have egos, and it makes us happy to bring happiness to others. Most of the time the happiness comes from a kids show. However, I did a show for retired federal employees yesterday and it was as much fun as a kids show. They wanted to participate and laughed and we all had a great time. So this makes adults shows also worthwhile.

When I initially found out I had a 3 1/2 inch mass between my heart and lungs (which turned out to be cancer) I had 2 shows scheduled to occur within the next couple of days, before I flew thousands of miles away to get the treatment which eventually saved my life. My initial instinct during this very stressful time was to cancel the shows, but they were commitments, so I kept them. They consisted of a kid's birthday party and being Merlin in the Renaissance Fair.
Well, a magic show involving children emerges you completely in the "here and now" because you and the kids are engaged in an intense and mutually fulfilling relationship that is exciting and all energy is focused on what they perceive is really magic. After 4 hours as Merlin and leading the parade with the kids hanging on my shoulders, I left the event and suddenly all of my worries came rushing back at me with full force. But for those 4 hours I was somewhere else, recharged, focused on the job at hand, having the time of my life. Performing tricks for a hairless young cancer patient during my own treatment refocused my attention on something else: bringing joy to a child's life in a time of need. I've carried the lessons I learned then, almost 20 years ago, as to the benefits and the joy doing magic for others gives back to me. In the 1950's, everyone died from Hodgkin's disease within about a year and a half. Back then, there was no cure. I'm still alive today, and that truly is magic. We live in an age of miracles. As Doug Henning said, "The art of magic is to create wonder. If we live with a sense of wonder, our lives will become filled with joy." Share the joy! :magicrabbit: |

Somewhat like Steve Pradell posted above, I recently found out I had prostate cancer as I was getting changed for a show. (My urologist called me on my cell phone.) While I was somewhat dazed by the call, I quickly had to focus on the Cub Scout show I was getting ready to do. I had no time to think about my cancer and I credit that show for getting me into a mindset of "what do I need to do next" rather than "woe is me." (The chances of curing me are very good.)
When I turned 40, it became very clear to me that we magicians are very lucky. We make people happy for a living! There aren't too many jobs like that. Michael |

Wow. Some real heart felt stories out there. I love what I do for a living and there is nothing else on earth I'd rather be doing than to bring smiles to peoples faces and laughter from their hearts. It's priceless.

Reading these stories made me realize how much magic has helped me too. Earlier this year, my 17 month old grand daughter was murdered by my daughter's boyfriend, who is not the biological father. My daughter had no insurance so I paid for the funeral and headstone. The church cemetery, where she is buried, donated the plot for our family. I did a show for the church a couple of months later.
That show meant a lot to me as I was grateful for their compassion and generosity. After the show, although I had been feeling down, it picked me up. Since then, I have done a few more shows that have helped me get over this awful mindset and feeling I carry. Magic is a wonderful therapy when you are down. Thanks for sharing your stories and letting me share mine. Glenn

Glenn, my sincere condolences, what a tragedy. I can only imagine how hard it must be to make people laugh with such a weight on your mind. But when we peform we do tend to escape to another place, of silly rhymes and patter, breaking wands and failing magic tricks!
There's definitely a bio-chemical thing going on too, and certainly adrenalin must play quite a part. For sure, if I'm feeling a bit low or run-down, performing a show is a great tonic. But I think it's the energy that connects the performer and audiencethat I value most. Potty |
