New to mentalism, I was wondering if, in some case, it's okay to built your performance around a theme.
For example, if ask to do a gig, for a particular group, like a Karate class or occasion like Halloween. I realise that some tricks, you may not, since it's reduce the choice to much for the layman, which can diminish the effect. |

Around a theme is great... around a character might even be better.

Effects are like lines in the script of a play; if something doesn't fit the character or overall theme, it doesn't matter how strong a piece of writing it might be, if included, it risks compromising the overall impact and credibility of the work.

NO!!! Don't build your routines around a definite concept ... It'd be too unoriginal
Try for something sporadic and unconnected

Building your show around a theme is gimmicky and too much like magic instead of mentalism.
Building the show around a character is different - that could work well if you pick the right character.

Yes, I think character is ultimately the way to go. Now if I could just figure out who I am?

Or you could build a show around what you want your audience to experience. your character will emerge automatically from that. It should be an amplified version of who you are and not fake or phoney. In my opinion or view...
Of course that's just my view. |

Mentalism is what it is. I would not recommend mentalism with a theme unless the mentalist was a experienced comedian mentalist.

Dynamike,
"Mentalism is what it is." With all due respect my brother, but, what is mentalism? I think it depends on your motivation and what you'll trying communicate to your target audience. As a black mentalist that seeks to uplift and inspire, my target audience is primarily inner city youth. Ay show is themed on a Harriet Tubman quote,"I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves". Overall, the premise of my show is thoughts liberate or enslave based on one's mental construct. Peace. Walter

IMO There's nothing wrong with tailoring a performance around a particular theme although in the long run it will require a massive amount of work to rebuild every show for each different audience or booking you perform. As a professional, working like this all the time would be almost impossible, but for the occassional special gig, why not?
I guess the key is to use what you know about the specific group to capture and inspire their imagination. What has special resonance for them? For your Karate club example: in my experience martial artists are often interested not just in physical and technical development but also in some of the philosophy and mysticism of the Orient. If you truly have the depth of understanding to do justice to a subject like that through your performance, then it will definitely resonate with that audience. I'm sure you can imagine how you could allude to and reference a rich subject such as this, even in your standard effects. Whatever you choose, be careful not to lay it on too thick (think flavour rather than theme), don't step away too far from who you are, and have fun.
