This is my first post of probably many...

I am 66 yrs. old. I carry a walking cane everywhere I go.

Sometimes I actually need it, but primarily it is for self defense. I am curious if anyone here knows of any routines for "floating" or "dancing" a heavy 35" hickory stick. I am not really interested in the full-blown dancing cane routines.

I was a pro in the late 70's and early 80's working mostly Trade Shows. I am familar with the works of Dave Mann, Losander, etc.

I will answer all PM's.

Why not try Leipzig's : "A few grips with a cane" that is in Vernon's 'Tribute to Leipzig' book? It uses an ungimmicked cane and with practice looks incredible. It requires a cane with a rounded handle, but may be adapted perhaps to the one you currently use. this was s favorite of the lat David Avadon and he did a wonderful job with it...No strings required!

Thanks J. That does sound interesting, but I will be using a string.

What exactly are you asking, you want a dancing cane routine that is not a dancing cane routine.

There is only the acrobatic moves left after the dancing is gone. That consists of rising cane, spinning cane, and float away cane. These are ususally included in the standard instructions of Lewis Ganson instruction sheets or the out of print book on the Dancing Cane.

If you want to know how to convert your cane to an Acrobatic Cane you can PM me.

JNeal, I searched my personal magic library. I thought I had all of Vernon's books, but am missing the one you mentioned.

wmhegbli, "full-blown" routine refers to many moves that I will not be able to do because of age and infirmities. These are moves such as "around the shoulders", etc.

I will PM you about the conversion to Acrobatic Cane.

Thanks much to both of you for your suggestions.

I am 62 and can still do the around the world with the cane. Sounds like you need to get out and walk a little and do some push-ups. Smile

Hope my answer helped you.

You can pick up the book The Magic of Nate Leipzig from http://www.llpub.com or your favorite dealer.

Hi Bill, your PM responses were most excellent! As for the spot-on health advice, my current poor physical condition is due to cancer, emphysema, and osteoporosis.... Add in a couple of auto accidents and I could hardly stand up for a couple of years. I did manage to go fishing about 50 times this summer.

I just started up magic again after a 35 year layoff. I am starting out with memorizing the Aronson Stack. I often go to a dark bar to listen to live blues jams on Wednesday nights. The lighting is perfect for a few simple cane tricks. It is also perfect for IT and IET effects a few inches aways.

So, although most dancing canes are of balsa or other lightweight woods, I will be using a heavy hardwood stick. I'll let you guys know how it works out.

One last question to keep this totally on topic: With a heavy cane, would you use a finger ring on the middle finger to attach the loop?

Hmmmmm..... I have a thumb, index, middle, ring, and pinky finger. So, is your second finger my ring finger? <grinning>

No it is as you call it the middle. I think your wife or girlfriend would be upset if you moved your ring to your middle finger. In most the magic book instructions they refer to the middle finger as the 2nd finger. Thumb is not a finger, it is the thumb, then the fingers. If you clip a coin between the 1st and 2nd finger, The way you define it, that would be a thumb palm and that is not what is meant.

Sorry to hear of your heath problems, hope you have a good recovery.
