The only people I've ever met in my life who would dare stand in front of an audience not knowing how they're going to say and do what they're going to say and do are magicians. And I've met mimes.
Perhaps it speaks to the power of magic that even magicians think they can just hem and haw through it, the effect hardly requiring their presence or involvement. A script isn't a series of lines to recite from memory; it's a framework that gives your performance body and meaning. I'm all for not getting in the way of the magic, but to say that one can "let the magic speak for itself" is often used as an excuse to not give it the treatment it deserves. Developing a well-conceived and executed script does, in fact, let the magic speak for itself, and it does it more clearly and in a way that the audience can appreciate what happened to the maximum extent possible. And, it keeps the performer from standing around repeatedly saying, "um" and "ahhh" while in his mind he's just "winging it." Although Ben Train brought up a different point than the OP asked for, it's a more valid answer than the question we were given. And the handling of the stapler? Well, it's basic prop management. Congratulations, you've found step 1. Of course, it's the absolute first lesson anyone learns when practicing something like the cups and balls, but there you go. |

How the hell can you even think of doing magic when you don't at least have a mental script of what your going to say? Saying um as the first word out of your mouth is not entertainment nor even letting the spectators know your worth watching. What it tells them is. "This guy is a moron!" I'm with Ben. You have to have a set script written down or at least so set in your mind you can recite it backwards and forward even while sleeping.
Sorry Jordan you score no points here with any of your reasons for not having a script. Having a script will also get rid of the very annoying uh's and umms now the repetitive ands etc...... yes I know this sounds more than harsh. It was meant to be. I'm sorry but if your not going to care enough to give your audience the courtesy of at least sounding like you know what your talking about and have better staging then expect those that are not afraid to say when something is wrong to do so, and do so loudly. Sometimes the truth needs to hurt. |

I want to say, for the record, I'm so terrified to have you guys see me perform. But, here's my video anyway. Please ignore the name- it was meant to limit the number of people who would watch it.
I'm really proud of 1:35 and on- you may want to fast forward to there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4VRoUCGtZg

Hey guys just out of interest do you think this was the best environment, to perform this effect? Do you think this type of environment would give a strong mentalism effect, like Stigmata, the maximum impact it commands?

I believe the environment would have been just fine if the performer knows how to handle a crowd. This involves engaging them and holding their interest throughout the proceedings (which also involves making him and the proceedings interesting enough to engage anyone). If you watch the video, you can see how at more than one point some people in the group break off into side conversations. This is a clear sign that he doesn't have them, and most of us would take this as a sign that something is amiss. It happens partly because of the staging and the distance as well as, dare I say it, the complete lack of a script. It would have been far better to bring them in much closer and have something to say to them when you have them there.

Animation.
A trick like this demands some investment from an audience (their attention), and because of the lack of script there was nothing here that would merit such interest. Subsequently you can see people aren't paying attention until the end, which is why some of them seemed a little confused about what had happened. The sad thing is that the trick could be great, it's just that he stopped working on it too soon. Best, Ben
