Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knew who owned the rights to The Gen, and if there has been a reprint of them, or if there will be a reprint of them in future years? I keep finding references to it and it seems like a place for obscure sleights from some big names and it would be interesting in pursuing it. Thoughts? Ed |

Hi Ed
I believe that you can by the e-book version through lybrary.com. The great thing is you can carry out searches and print of the pages as you need them |

Truesoldier,
Cheers for that. I've never been a fan of the E-books, and I prefer to sit with a book instead of having a digital version, or a printed version. Thanks for the heads up though, Ed |

This book sounds interesting. I tried to google it as well as looked for it on lybrary.com and did not find it in either places.
Edit. found it. searched by author Harry Stanley and it was there in lybrary.com |

There isn't re-printed version of "Gen". I don't think re-printed version will appear in the future as the digital version already has been published.
I bought UMPC (small computer) and filed all e-magazines and e-books in it. In it, I am carrying Gen, Genii, Sphinx, Magic Wand, Stanyon's Magic, Hugard Magic Monthly, Conjourer's Magazine, Pabular, Chicanary, Wizard, Linking Ring, Magic Mag, Magigram, Pentagram, New Pentagram, Sorcerer, Phoenix, Tops as well as my writing (about 3000 pages), so that I can read them anytime and anywhere. I am enjoying the benefit from e-publishing very much. Hideo Kato |

Hello Pete-san,
No I don't have them. Do you recommend 'Reel Works'? What is Pete's Leaflet? Can I obtain it? I also have Duffie's e-works, Workers by Michael Close on CD, e-version of Expert Card Technique, e-version of Expert At The Card Table and other free e-magazines like Clog, Card Polis, Cogitation. I forgot to mention I have Jinx. Of course I have MagicBook_1 and MagicBook_2 from Library.com. I hope some of you can recommend me other e-books and e-magazines. My interest is only on Card Magic. You have Pabular then you know the kind of magic Steve creates. It has a lot of card contributions from David Britland, and good ones from Peter Duffie and, unlike Pabular, Jerry Sadowtiz's material, which are excellent. I know about a magazine called "Ego" which was strictly an e-magazine and for cards only. It had material from known cardmen like R. Paul Wilson, Duffie and Jim Swain. Unfortunately I wasnt able to obtain it simply because I don't know where to find it. And the hottest magazine: New Tops has been FULLY released on CD-Rom: http://www.abbottmagic.com/New-Tops-on-CD-ABBnewtopscd.htm Good luck. And since you had the Pentagram, did you come across the info on Charles Jordan? I found them very interesting. Walton's version of a Vernon plot is worth doing too. ~ Feras |

With ebooks among us I doubt that magazines will ever be reprinted in paper - particularly magazines that ran for many years and accumulated thousands of pages.
For those that have a hard time finding the resources here are a few links: The Gen (you can download individual volumes if you prefer) http://www.lybrary.com/magazines-comics-c-21_36_1300.html Spell Binder http://www.lybrary.com/spellbinder-magazine-p-5367.html Jerry Sadowitz (mostly cards) http://www.lybrary.com/jerry-sadowitz-m-16425.html

Thank you Medifro-san for the information.
I forgot to mention I have "Spell Binder", "Cardiste" and "Bat". Recently I read the article about Jordan identity in "Pentagram". That story seems including untruth. In that article, Rufus Steel stated that Jordan was not a magician, but I concluded Charles Jordan was a magician after reading other sources. There are interesting articles about the Jordan controversy in several issues of "Bat". I have just ordered "New Tops" cd. Thanks again. Hideo Kato |

Martin Breese has the rights to The Gen and sells it as a CD-ROM. JP

Hi all,
I have been going on and on throughout my time here about these amazing, important resources. These are IMPORTANT, ESSENTIAL reference sources. One poster mentioned he could not find the gen as a "book". It is not a book. Rather, it is a behemoth compilation of almost 9000 pages of a GREAT UK magic magazine. The amount of effects is simply staggering, and Ian Rowland's excellent index is superb. I too prefer hardcopy, but, let's be realistic. It is very hard if not impossible to get complete runs of these invaluable resources in hardcopy. And The Gen, The New Tops, and MANY more are so widely referenced throughout the literature that I will again reiterate that they are ESSENTIAL. Chris Wasshuber, Martin Breese, Todd Karr, and others are doing a great service to the art by doing these. None of them are expensive really when you stop and consider both the sheer AMOUNT of effects to learn AND the MUCH lower cost of having them digital. What I do is when I find a routine, for example Eddie joesph's excellent series on The Cups and balls (found by the way in the MAMMOTH publication "The Magic Wand" which was published almost as long as "The Sphinx"), I print the hardcopy. These are faithful scans of the original material and so yes, you are going to get the ads, and the articles too. And I contest that these too are invaluable for building our knowledge base. And for those who think that these "older" periodicals are somehow dated, you are really missing out. Remember the effect Stigmata? How it was touted as new, revolutionary, and every superlative in Barnum's lexicon? Well, the orginal, and really MUCH better version is hidden in plain sight in the pages of Hugard's Magic Monthly. As for the quality of the scans? They are really excellent. There are a few pages here and there in a few of the publications that are a tad to light, but these are usually the ads, not the effects or articles. The Gen is a class magazine and the job done scanning it is simply superb. It is available at quality magic shops everywhere and of course, online. Ahimsa, Vlad |

Vlad, what was the trick that Stigmata is based on called in Hugard's Magic Monthly? I have a subscription to AskAlexander, so I have access to this. However, a search of 'Stigmata' in Hugard's Magic Monthly actually gave no search results. If I knew the name it would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance! |

Ok guys, give me a few days and I will give you the EXACT volume and page in HMM. It is Christmas after all You know, these great periodicals have SO many treasures in them it is truly mindboggling. I know that some do not like e-books, but, as Chris correctly pointed out, you are not going to see reprints of the truly giant ones like The Gen. I prefer hard copy too, but, I will not rob myself or my audiences of these effects that are only now available in e-book form. I have no problem adapting. I will say again that when I can get hard copy I do. So, for instance, in January I am buying the new, ACCURATE reprint of Bascom Jones MAGICK. I have many of these periodicals we have talked about in hard copy. However, Master Hideo mentioned that he has many of these electronically on one laptop. I have done the same with all the electronic ones I have. It is GREAT to use Ask Alexander and also Chris's great research tool at lybrary.com, and then go IMMEDIATELY to the source. Folks, please do not allow your distaste for e-book format keep you from these gems? It does take a bit of a paradigm shift, but, when you settle into these magnificent resources, you will be SO happy. And, you know, you CAN print things you find that you want to study as hardcopy! Heck, start small and just get Spellbinder. In fact, when I bought mine, Martin Breese ALSO shipped the three bound hard copies representing each year of Tucker's great mag. I do not know if he is still offering it all in a nice low priced package, but, the DVDs alone are worth it AND, the originals in the hardcopy are reproduced EXACTLY as they were printed: VERRRRY tiny print. So, in THIS case, having the e-book is actually BETTER. For the brave ones: The Magic Wand is MAMMOTH. It is as large as The Sphinx, but, NO index. However, the process of discovery is a THRILL. For instance, I found a VERY cool multipart series by the late Master Eddie Joseph on The Three Shell Game. In its final years in fact, the Magic Wand proclaimed that its goal was to be the BIGGEST magic BOOK ever written. Phew! Sorry for the soapbox sisters and brothers, but if you miss these, you are only robbing yourself. And what sense does that make?? Ahimsa, Vlad |
