I was reading over the Sucker Torn and Restored Napkin in Mark Wilson's CCM, and it seems like a fun trick. I had an idea for a slightly different ending and wanted to see what people thought.

What if for the the final napkin that is produced at the very end, rather than just using an un-torn napkin, you prepared the napkin ahead of time by tearing it up and taping it back together (either with scotch tape or very visible blue painters tape). Then the final line of patter becomes something along the lines of "Of course if someone sees the secret napkin you have no choice but to use real magic to tape it back together."

The downside is that you'd need to prepare the napkin ahead of time, but in certain circumstances (a gathering at your own house for instance) this isn't a big deal. My thinking is that this would add even more humor to the routine, and also be a bit more amazing, since the taped napkin would be visibly different from the original napkins.

Do you think this would add to the effect, or does it detract from it in some way?

Every magician needs plans and more plans for "outs". It adds humor. That is also entertainment. Entertainment is the MAIN THING.

I like the idea, and I am certain that others who also like it would find it no trouble to take the time to prepare it and use it. Those who find it a bother, won't use it and that's OK, too! It makes its use that much more exclusive.

Some of the guys at The Magic Nook have also come up with different endings for the old Napkin Tear and have written their ideas and methods up in The Wizards' Journal #8 - "The Torn and Restored Napkin Revisited".
