I think it is fair to say we learned magic from a mentor. This could be in text, video format or from other individuals.

My favorite is, "I learned it from those Kung Fu movies" and I am still using it today.

I look at them very seriously and say, "You know how magicians are never supposed to reveal their secrets?
"Yeah...." "That's one of them." said with a grin. Another favorite is, "If I were to reveal that information, trained assassins from the Magic Castle would be sent after me in a heartbeat." |

(curtsies) I thank you, kind sir! I liked yours, but anyone looking at chubby me would have a good chuckle if I used it. That might not be a bad idea! At least it's a good change of subject.

Responding with something totally different and unexpected always catch the audience offguard and it is fun watching their expressions.

This thread made me laugh. Tell the truth always! Yet if you think about it magicians never tell the truth, if I say I'm going to put a sponge ball in my left hand, and have a nice retention vanish that makes it LOOK like I did what I said, the whole thing is deception.
People tell me often where I learn my magic. I don't think a lot of people realize how much practice goes into the hard effects, flourishes, etc. When they ask I usually just tell the truth, DVD's, online, books. |

The magician that made me really want to learn magic told me that he started out watching magicians, figuring stuff out, and learning effects from other magicians. How true that was, I have no idea, but it seems like a good thing to tell people.

Tell them of a local store etc. Point them to the water. It's up to them to drink it.

"How did you do that?!?!"
"It's easy to make a coin disappear, okay here, let me show you again, in slow mo. When I discovered this ability I was freaked out too." I would then proceed to use Michael Ammar's little hand and freak them out (in a good way), and it's such a funny illusion. |
