I've read some of the threads on magnet safety, including one where a guy lost part of a finger. A few years ago I ordered 4 VERY powerful magnets. They are 2" by 2" by 1/4" thick. They are separated by steel plates of the same size as the magnets. I don't have great finger strength anymore, and I am hesitant to mess with them.
Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to separate them safely? I like the idea of performing some M5/Big Bertha effects but I am not certain that I can take them apart without getting hurt in some way. Also, I think they were pretty expensive, so I would like to keep from damaging the magnets too. |

The best way to remove these kind of magnets and keeper is to slide them off. I don't fully understand how you are using these. But if you screw the keeper to one surface securely, then you can slide the other side off.

Hi Richard, Thanks for your rapid response. I don't quite understand what you mean by screwing a keeper? I just now looked at the package again. Imagine a club sandwich in layers. There are 3 magnets and 4 steel plates. All of them are the same size. My goal is to remove the steel plates. That will leave me with 3 magnets. When "assembled" I will have one (three-part) magnet that will be 3/4" (.75 inch) thick. The final dimension will be 2.0 X 2.0 X .75 inches. This is about the same size as the commercial one-piece M5 magnet.
I plan to velcro this beast to my knee/leg, using velcro, for some miracles to happen on a wooden dining room table top. The magnet will be strapped under my pants, just above the knee. |

This sounds dangerous. I can see you with this strapped to your leg dragging a metal chair around the room.
The keeper is the steel plates. Slide off is still the only easy way to separate them. richard

Thank you sir. I'll try that. It may take me a few days to get my courage up.

MemDeck.... be careful, the lost finger was not a joke. A lot of people underestimate the power of magnetism. Other than nuclear forces, magnetism is the strongest force on this planet. I've been to plants where they have super magnets the size of a car... that stuff will KILL you.

I don't underestimate the power. I've seen it yank satellites from the sky. Magnets can give new meaning to the phrase "finger-flinging". My concerns for safety are real.
In your comment about super magnets the size of a car, I assume those are some form of electromagnet? If so, at least you can turn them off with a switch. These new rare-earth magnets are "on" 24/7. It's amazing the power they can generate in such a small package. |

Yes, electro-magnets were what I saw... still dangerous. They can pick up a 200 pound piece of steel yards away flying at high speed. Scary.

Slide the plates out. Carefully. Don't get your fingers between the magnets.
There's a story on United Nuclear (who sells neodymium magnets) about a child who lost a hand playing with the powerful magnets. It was completely crushed between two of them. I keep my magnets out in the garage, either high up out of reach (and sight) or locked in a chest under a bunch of other junk. On a lighter note, the first time I was playing around with my M5 strength magnet, I went over to my fiancees place, and her dog, when running to greet me, got her choke chain stuck to my calf. An 80-lbs pitbull mix is a bit more inconvenient than a chair.

That's a funny story. At least you don't have to let the chair "finish".
I see from your sig that you are in Newark. I used to order large quanties of raw horse meat from a meat packing house in Newark to feed my mountain lions. |

Here is a rather gruesome story, with photos, about a guy who lost part of a finger when playing with two large magnets.

I have a friend who has a magnet so strong, when he has it in his car he can't drive over railroad tracks without getting stuck.

Bob, no metal buttons for me.
MrGreggy, that's good info on separating the magnets. Thank you. Mine aren't shiny like those in the video. Hi Pete. It's nice to see that you are still with us. I haven't seen you since the mid 1970's at the Oakland Magic Circle. Is Lloyd Jones still kicking? |

Magnets should also be kept away from computer hard drives and magnetic media, same for pencils because of the graphite

Good advice, Bill.
Not to mention MRI machines, watches, clocks, pacemakers....... And, meeting up with someone who has metal pins in their leg(s). This could give new meaning to "joined at the hip". Finally, those who carry these devices should refrain from juggling hatchets and knives. |

Implant pins are made of non magnetic 300 grade stainless steel OR titanium. Pure cobalt is used sometimes too, so the magnetically conjoined twin idea wouldn't work. Heh heh.
So Bill, I should keep pencils away from hard drives or away from magnets?

Graphite is the worst thing for dvd players or computer hard drives
graphite is an incredibly hard carbon particle that sticks to electronics I don't think graphite hurts magnets however, the new solid state hard drives are also not affected |

I didn't know that about the steel pins.
I can add another true story about these magnets. My brother who is very strong and has a 7th degree black belt in karate, offered to help me separate my magnets. While constantly advising him of the dangers, he went ahead and tried to slide one magnet from one of the plastic spacers. It looked like he was doing well and actually got one separated. I guess he relaxed his vigilance for a moment. Then, the piece in his hand shot off like a bullet from a foot away and crashed into the other two amid a large flurry of sparks! It was pretty scary. He took the two unbroken units with him to work and will try to separate them in the shop where he works. I'll let you guys know if he is successful.... |

Here is a very well done video showing how to separate magnets, from smallest to biggest. This guy knows what he's talking about, and from what I can see, has all his fingers.
