Wow! I remember my first trip to a Magic Shop, I live really close to NYC and I was always hanging out at the magic shops there. The magician that worked in one shop was a huge inspriation to me and taught me a lot of stuff. But next time you go shopping for magic stuff, I recommend picking up Bill Tarr's "Now you see it now you don't". It is a terrific book, it doesn't only teach cards but all sorts of sleights. Also I would pick up a packet effect.

First buy books over Tricks as they hold more value for money. The books along with a few DVD's and videos are your best bet:
