Any opinions on the coin material in Arthur Bucley's "Principles and Deceptions"?
I've read the table of contents online and there seems to be an extensive amount of coin work in it.

Principles and Deceptions is to coin magic what Erdnase is to card magic!!! Nothing easy in there...but it will give you a strong foundation in coin work. Also, as far as I know...this is the first book to have published the muscle pass.

Dittos on what Mike said.
I'll note that Jonathan Townsend said much the same thing on a couple of early posts here. (Other threads) And I just started re-exploring P&D as well. It's interesting to see how many things are described in there that also showed up in Bobo's. (Including a vanish that Buckley says is Alan Shaw's, but is otherwise described in MCM as the "Bobo vanish") You'll find an entire stage coin act described here, one of only three I can think of that were recorded in this depth (the other two being Downs' and Buckingham's) And as I discussed with Reed McClintock the other day, some of the first printed material dealing with the production and management of huge amounts of coins is here. Consider the opening position for the John Brown Cook routine: 12 to 16 silver dollars palmed in a stack in your left hand, four backpalmed in the right. Talk about "Knucklebusters"! To top it off, my old, old copy shows a price of Four Dollars! I got my little reprint of Erdnase for 95 cents. Boy, if only I knew to stop while I was ahead....

Well, that's the problem. If I can't find the book then I'll have to buy it from lybrary.com.

Frank,
This is a little too late to help you now, but a copy was just on eBay with a starting bid of $19.95 and the auction ended with no bids! You may not have come across it because it was in a weird category... something like Books: nonfiction: performing arts: other. Do a search for the title or author specifically every so often if you're looking for something in particular. Every once in a while you'll find some hidden gems on eBay..... and they are usually "mis-categorized" by the seller. Happy Hunting, Bob PS I also do a search for "used books" on Google, and check on all those webpages for specific titles. There ARE bargains out there to be had!

This was one of the first books I ever got into back in the mid 70's.
I believe it is one of the first sources of the Muscle P. It was a "hidden" move in that description. I go back to the book every once in a while for the coins and the meat. Harris Deutsch

If anyone else is looking for this book, I saw a used copy the other day on Amazon, and found fourteen used ones on addall.com and abebooks.com, ranging from $40 to $100.

I purchased a copy from gamblers book club for $7.95. I'm sure it's a reprint, but it contains the same info. I would understand the other price if you're a collector and prefer to have the original printings.

I just got a copy of the book myself. I have only heard of it I had never seen a copy or anything. Paul Chosse put up a source for it and and then I called and ordered it. I now have a new favorite book.
If you don't own this book go out of your way to find it. It is amazing. Mike when did we talk about this book. |
