Are there any parlor or stage rope tricks or routines that just use a single ungaffed piece of rope? I’d like to put together a routine using just a single piece of rope around 5 feet in length . So far I’ve got the rope through neck, dissolving 3 and reappearing knots and instantaneous knot all from Dary’s fooler doolers. The plan is going from a rope routine > ring on rope routine > linking rings.

There is a rope routine just like you describe (single ungimmicked rope) provided on The Wiz Kids' "Rope Magic" DVD available from my site or from the Wiz Kids site.

Dear markis,

You are changing ropes before ring on rope, right?

I had/have a similar progression in my routine, but I'm backing off from all three in a row.

I guess I started with all three because it seemed a natural progression and because they were fun to practice one after the other.
But now I'm thinking that all three together may seem like one long trick to the spectator even if the music changes. Especially considering that each one is a routine of several trick, trick , tricks.

I'd be interested to hear other people's take on this.

If you'd like to use a shorter rope for your one rope effects (one you could also use for your Ring and Rope) I'd suggest "The Dennis Loomis Knot Routine Plus..." (not just because I'm on it).

Daryl's Rope Magic Made Easy is a great resource as well (using all different length Ropes).

Aldo Colombini has some great one rope stuff to but I don't know if he has it all together on one (or several) disks.

I tend towards Video because, being dyslexic, it is much easier and they are all excellent teachers.

I know you'll have fun. Good Luck.

Jack Miller's Linking Ring Routine has a section of moves with a linking ring and a piece of rope.

I think there are some routines with only one rope at Tabary's DVD-set.
Quite a lot of good rope tips there! Most often ungaffed (though, maybe with a little extra (short) rope)

For some reason doing the Shoelace knot and then knocking the knot off to fly into the audience always gets comments -- so, I'd leave that in. I have a unique C/R approach that is great for an opener, especuially if you want to do later ring effects. PM me.

As I recall FLIP does a bit where you have one piece of rope and in an INSTANT with a flick there are three knots on the rope. One at each end and one in the middle. Flip is a rope master.

My signature effect with a single ungimmicked rope is the Panama Rope Mystery. I use a 7 ft. piece of rope and it is the cleanest and best rope effect I have ever used. I bought it for a dollar from the creater, Ted Collins, and have been doing the effect in every performance for the past 45 years. You can find it in the Tarbell Course Volume 2 on page 368 in my edition. I highly recommend this effect for any performance. I have done it close-up and I have done it in front of 1200 people on a cruise ship. There are no gimmicks. It is the closest thing to MAGIC that I have ever done.
