Hi,
I am hoping someone might remember a mechanical acrobat from the 1960's or 70's that was billed under the name Ioni or the Great Ionie. A while back someone was selling a video of shows on Ebay and I believe there was a performance. I was told he was similar to Robert-Houdins acrobat.
Thanks to all!

Somewhere I have a video of John Gaughan's performance of it on the Paul Daniels show.

Hi Steve,
Thank you very much for the reply.
I think the one on Paul Daniels show was a copy of Robert-Houdins acrobat.
From what I remember about Ioni is that he was mounted on a static pole that rotated on its own axis. The puppeteer hid under a blanket next to the piece. I am trying to gather info for an article about these mechanical acrobats. Have you ever seen the copy of Antonio Diavolo that I built? He is own Youtube. His link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44UBXBlGmik
If you get a chance to have a look at my copy, I hope you enjoy the video.
Thank you again!!

I did a TV show in Barcelona (Magic Andreu) with IONI about 15 years ago.

As I remember, the principle of his automaton was bit different than Houdin's.
He had like a cabinet (with curtains) on the side where he was during the acrobat evolutions.

I spent a bit of time with IONI and he showed me the figure. I've also seen John Gaughan's version... one of the great classic pieces you would ever wish to see.

Get the book that was written by John Gaughan and Jim Steinmeyer.
The name of the book is Antonio Diavolo.. A souvenir of his Performance.
Concerning the History and Restoration of Robert Houdin's Celebrated Trapeze Automaton...
This book talks about John getting Antonio in 1977 and at that time it would have been 128 years old.. It talks about John totally rebuilding it..
It have sketches in it..
You can order it from Jim Steinmeyers web site...
I hope this helps,

Antonio is a different automaton than Ioni.

Years ago Doug Henning toured with Ioni as part of his show. It was wonderful.
