Hi Guys.
My crowd control for all my tricks is pretty good. Run wolf run gets them up and shouting but I can get them back down and calm when I need to. The problem I have with Blow Your Stack is that with all the cups flying about the place and the mouse popping up the kids are all over the place. Not what I want. How do you cope or how do you structure the trick so you can stay in control?

That is one of the trick's hazzards . . .takes a minute to settle them down afterwards. But it's still worth it.

I set the rules of the game.
You can only touch your cups ,I can only touch my cups. And nobody else can touch any cup. Seems to work well for me. good luck |

Lay down the rules before the game starts. The chaos still happens from time to time, but I have music playing, and my mic is muted, so I can speak under the music to control a bit of the issues. It really is a fun routine, but there's needs to be cooling down period after the routine. Ken |

I play it during my games sesion. I usualy let the kids play against each other before I play the winner and do the business! I'll try again.

Boy did I screw up!! I never intended to create an effect that kids have so much fun that they loose control!!
I think if a tricks hazard is that they need to settle down is a pretty good hazard! Colin, this trick has been around since the beginning of my company and I am sure you will find plenty of suggestions of how to control the little screaming critters Enjoy and thanks for the support! Chance

I am guessing that I am not the only one that gets rebooked because of being able to settle things down after "bringing them up".
Don't know this specific routine..but in general... 1. Something visual such as using hand sanitizer on hands then behind ears under arm pits 2. Something the audience can do together..such as a singing to a quieter song played on my ukulele or harmonica 3. I try to put something together or take something off..looking like I am having trouble..such as my hat, coat, vest.. 4. Bring out a baby puppet..and lower my voice ..so we don't wake the "baby"... (I bring them up again of course through the program..in the above example when the door to here baby house is shut on her hand.../no puppet is actually harmed.. live theatre....priceless... happy turkey days...may your only turkey be on your plate not in your prop room Harris

Maybe I should invest in a cattle prod and disguise it as a magic wand, the first one who gets too close...Zapp!

Don't bother with the version for kids. Make a big one for the adults in the back who won't stop talking!

When I do the Blow Yur Stack, it does happen that the kids help in giving back the fallen cups. They help the child beat me to the game as much as possible while I am blindfolded. It also makes the trick go faster. I guess this is part of the effect, and kids love it.

First, I have a line of tape on the floor that the kids in the audience sit behind. When I begin the routine, I say that my helper and I are going to have a contest. As I explain the rules of the game and demonstrate the cup stacking I accidentally knock over a couple of cups of mine and let it fall to the floor. Sometimes a child in the audience might reach out to grab a fallen cup if it rolls nearby them.
"Ooops," I say to the kids and remark that if that happens just remember to remain behind the line because we'll need to determine the winner of the game fair and square. I find that nothing more really needs to be said. Then when the stacking begins the only person not playing fair and square is me.

I have a line on the floor and make the rules clear.
Then look at Harris' 4th idea - do a quiet puppet / extra trick to help them calm down. You know they've got to listen for about a minute or so, they soon work it out as they want to see/hear what is going on.

Next Item on the Wolf/Dymond product line, Magical Electrified Tape. A dazling multi coloured magic line denotes the performance area. Any child who tries to enter the performance area uninvited receives a fun and stimulating burst of energy!
For those realy dificult crowds, if the child gets past the "Magic Line" the improved Wolf/Dymond Razor wire, multi coloured blades of fun! Sorry I think it's time for my medication. Imagine what I'm like by the end of Christmas!

I like watching kids go nuts. It means they're having a great time. It's much better than silence and comments of "that's lame!" anyway. Not that that's ever happened, of course...
The only time I'd try to keep them seated and proper is when doing an effect that's angle sensitive, and then just to avoid blowing the effect. Harris - great suggestions for those "calming down" moments. Thanks. Magician Ross McKay (I may be spelling that wrong) has a couple of DVDs out on magic for children. He said something about how you should treat children's joy and noisiness as a gift - a validation that you're reaching them. Before I got back into magic, I hired him (randomly, out of the telephone book) to perform at my step-daughter's sixth birthday, and got to experience the truth of his philosophy in person and through the happy memories of the birthday girl.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

The magi should always be in control, even when he looks otherwise. Aside from setting the ground rules, as per the instructions, a PRO should have no problems.

I've only performed this a couple of times - but it's getting great reactions. Not strictly a magic trick but the children really seem to enjoy it. Yes, the children can get a bit excited but both times I performed it I used it as the last trick so I didn't feel it was too important to get the children to "calm down" (never mind the parents!) I think the whole point of this routine is that the children do get excited. When I lsst performed it one of the children "stole" one of the cups when I was blindfolded but I thought this all added to the fun!

I did end up getting passing it on. Maybe it was just not my style. Great product, just not for me.
