I use my alot! I am a little different however. I only do gospel shows. I use it as apart of my prayer presentation.
I borrow the phone and go through the actions. Then my puppet comes up talking on the phone which is the phone. I always get a great reaction from it. |

I don't use the effect, but you say you have tried it several times. How many is several? It can take over a hundred performances before I hit on the right way to sell an effect and get the reactions I want. Don't give up unless you dislike the effect yourself.

I would video tape your next performance and then watch it yourself to see what it really looks like. I would also have a competent magician or a theatre professional review your work and see what they have to say. I think Kimmo's post is quite on the mark in that it often takes many many performances to find the right presentation frame for an effect. He also correctly asks "Is this the effect for you?". Eugene Burger who'm I admire greatly often talks about finding effects that speak to you. The products that Chance makes are the best available and I've owned more than my share of them. Still given that I have resold some of them because, as well made as they are, they just didn't end up fitting my performing style. Part of the danger of course that we all love magic so much that everytime wr turn around something new is coming out and this can distract us from the real work of finding a presentation that matches our magical character.

I made my own prop to reappear the phone. It is based on the "can-phone-with-a-string" we all used as kids, but my is a modern, 'high'tech' version. I call it my "Dual Modular Hgh-Tech Can Phone Set". I also made up another item that makes my routine kind of unique. I have had really good success with my routine.

The last time I used the Cellulator the smoke didn't go off and it really hurt the trick. I was disappointed that the lights worked and the siren worked, but no smoke. The phone-ally with the tin cans at the end did play well. I have mixed feelings on this trick, but after spending almost a grand on both props I am not going to give it up yet.

I haven't used mine a lot, because I really have so many routines to choose from. But I have a good, solid routine with it, and produce the phone from a sealed soup can. The bits of business I use are a combination of the gags for Bill in Lemon, and my Dirt Eradicator routine....along with some unique "phoney" gags. It's a very strong routine...I don't think it should take more than a few run-throughs to get it down. Potty |

Mike,
As Potty said, it is typically a low battery or a dirty smoke pot which I covered very well in the instructions. I have used my Smoke Pot system in well over 100 units and have yet to hear of one fail that was not due to human error. You MUST test the glow plug before every show and be sure you get a strong glow. You typically get about 15-20 shows per battery with the smoke pot. Which is still FAR cheaper than the original Wiz Kote which costs about $1.00 per show as it uses a Rocket Ignitor which are about a buck a piece. I hope this helps and hang in there. The prop will do you justice if you give it the time and routine development. Thanks! Chance

It was my fault I should have tested the Cellulator smoke pot and I didn't. I did test the lights and siren so I thought the smoke pot would work. I thought I had a new battery in it. Live and learn. I always test my Pro Viper snake basket and my chicken sword card fountain. Now I know to test this also.

I always remove the glow plug after every show. I use a dremel with a steel brush wheel to clean it. I only install and check it again before the show. In this way, you avoid the rust which the smoke powder makes. And the glow plug lasts longer.
I did encounter several times when it did not glow but that was my negligence. Now I know better. Without that smoke, the effect is lost.

I also had problems with the smoke going off. I have seen quite a few for sale on the Café and when I questioned them why they were selling this was the reason that the smoke was not reliable. I have some of Wolf's other props and they are great but this one in my opinion was not up to par as the others. Nobody's perfect.

I have to step in here and state a matter of fact.
I have yet to have a single smoke ignition not go off unless it was human error. Every person I have spoken to, when trouble shooting, finally admitted that they did not have the proper battery power or loaded the smoke powder improperly. I created this system and is VERY simple and FAR more reliable than any other before it. The only way I can see that it is unreliable is if the person using it is not using it properly. Otherwise they could not sell it as the smoke system still has to work in order to sell it...correct? If not, they would call me as I back up all my creations. So the lesson is, some magicians are a bit lazy or in too big of a hurry to use the prop properly. This is not a Hip Hop Rabbit trick. It is an electronic device that requires a little bit of attention and it will serve you well. I feel it necessary to state the case before people start to spin this into something that it is not. I know you do not mean any harm but the facts must be stated above opinion or those who fail to read my instructions or follow them Thank you Chance Wolf

Chance makes a very good point. If folks were selling the effect because the smoke system wasn't working then wouldn't the person that bought it speak up? Why knowingly sell something when you believe that it isn't working properly? Doesn't make sense at all. The more likely scenario is as a few have stated 'operator difficulty'.
It would seem that folks are just a little to quick to rush out and do this effect without totally understanding the important nuances of the effect. Read the instructions people!! Far too many magicians want effects to work for them without them doing even an inch of work. jeff |

Here's what I've learned about the smoke system, as it relates to the Sneeker Tweeker, which may be the same type of ignition system in the Cellulator.
Based on my experience, the batteries must be brand new (i.e., fresh). I'm using standard alkaline Duracell batteries. If you use batteries that have sat on the shelf, but were never used for a period of time, this could affect ignition results. Check expiration dates and purchase ones with the latest dates. Energizer lithium batteries might also provide longer term and more reliable results than a standard alkaline battery because lithium batteries generally last longer in battery-operated devices and have a much longer storage life. One thing I can say, as an owner of many of Chance Wolf's products, is that every product I own is first-rate when it comes to quality. And he stands behind his products. That's just two reasons why he has an outstanding reputation. I've found that if I ever have a question about the proper use of one of his products, the best course of action is to contact him first. There's something to be said about being able to deal directly with the creator and manufacturer. That also helps avoid creating unfounded speculation about product reliability on the Café. Additionally, my experience is that Wolf's Magic absolutely stands behind their work and their customer service is among the best around.

I must speak up here as well. Full disclosure, I do consider Chance a friend. I've been to his workshop, and I've seen first hand the incredible amount of work that goes into each of his products.
That being said, I had an issue with one of his products a few years ago. Instead of speaking directly to him, I asked here on the Café if anyone had experienced the same issue I was having. Chance contacted me privately with in hours, and the issue was resolved almost immediately. I learned that I should have spoken to him directly, because he cares passionately about each product he creates. Chance wants performers to use his props to the best of their ability. Not many creators and manufacturers are out there that will stand behind their products like Chance and Shelly. Ken |
