I wonder if there are other routines or ideas that can be performed using the complete Hopping half coin set made by Johnson beside the classical routine that comes with the set. If there are, in what book or DVD can they be found?

What about you figuring one out.
Here is the challenge. Do a routine WITHOUT going to your pocket. You have the right to use a mouth down glass to nest the coins progressively You have the right to use other gaffs (like shell or Scotch and Soda) to show the coins somewhere as you make them vanish somewhere else You have the right to use a purse (with or without magnet) You have the right to use a pill box (Okito Box or Boston box or Swadling box or Slot box) You have the right to use a portable hole (felt large or small, or metal like Gary Ouellet's silver passage) You have the right to use a Hold Out (Jack Miller or Antonio Romero or Kepplinger) You have the right to place magnets in your sleeve to stick some coins behind the lower part of your biceps You have the right to use a Sanada gimmick You have the right to involve a David Roth lapel gimmick (coin shell sticking inside the lapel to appear having one of the coins having traveled there) You have the right to use a rattle box You have the right to use Gozinta boxes You have the right to use a table or to do a strolling routine You have the right to make coins travel between your hands and to some form of container (purse, Okito box, rattle box, Gozinta box...) You have the right to make the coin travel to the spectator's body (sleeve, pocket, watch...) you have the right to make the various coins of the gaff to travel to different places. You have the right to use the gaff to make a solid go through a solid You can make the coins travel progressively or together You have the right to make the coins change matter (from silver to copper for examle) You have the right to ... ... and you have the right (if not the duty) to combine some of the above You just must not use your pockets and need to create a time displacement between the real cause (the time when you use the gaff) and the magic moment (when you claim that the magic happens. Looking forward to reading you

Lawrence O, I really appreciate all the suggestions and I understand the intention behind. My background in magic is also more as a designer of stage and platform apparatus. I did that in the 80’s and early 90’s, then took a long break from magic. I recently came back to it, with an interest in coin magic--but just as a hobby.
The old classical Hopping Half routine seems smart but I was curious if there are any other new presentations using the Hopping Half set as is, without adding or taking off any of the gimmicked coins. In the original SCB coin set, for example, the coins come with a classical routine but many coin experts came out with new approaches and published new routines using the same coins.

There are quite a few books and DVDs devoted to tricks that can be done with "Scotch and Soda", so why not something devoted to the hopping half set -- which should provide for many more possibilities? For someone like me (an enthusiastic amateur, but with limited time to devote to magic), while I'd like to come up with my own unique handling, it helps greatly to start with something that's already been worked out, learn that, and then adapt/grow it from there to make it more unique to me. Additionally, seeing what others have done may open some new insights that would aid in coming up with an original routine, when/if I decide to go that route. |

Sounds like a good challenge. I think I'd be better to give it a try. if not I like to present hopping half in the usual way but instead of the " make the spectator feel stupid" patter, I like to use a I'm just learning a trick and can't remember which coin goes into the pocket patter. Not original I read it on the Café not long ago when this forum was talking about hopping halves sets (btw a really great buy! the sun and moon coin is worth the price alone.)or perhaps tell the love story of Tristan and Isolde (rather John and elizabeth)
search the Café theres lots of ideas on here. |

I took my set apart. I like HH, but Short Hop is simpler for me. Easier to keep track of and I'm not stuck w/ shell in my pockets that will likely get dinged b/c I'll forget about them. I use the 2 expanded shells for other unrelated routines, but am still playing w/ sun/moon. It's a fun gaff that needs a routine.

Short Hop from Mark Jenest's Miracles While You Wait is my absolute favorite. It is my most performed effect since I carry it everywhere with me.
