I think Todd will be making some very interesting splashes, in the near future. I'm looking forward to seeing them, having heard dire rumours!

Notice the Brit spelling of "rumours". I'm trying to show a particular kind of class.

MagicMatt12803,

It's one way to go and if it is the one that you care for, by any means. You are absolutely right the important word in "show business" is "business". Now you get fooled on one account in my opinion. Harry Houdini didn't get fame in holding people's attention for long periods of time. I would dare suggest, on the contrary. He was very efficient at creating myth with the medias, on the spot.

Harry Houdini's brother (Hardeen) was actually a much better magician than Houdini, but Houdini could create the myth and understood what made media to relay it. The trick was not in holding attention during the trick, it was to create the attention catcher with media so called reports. That's something that both David Copperfield in a smarter way, or David Blaine in a more shrewd way, have transposed in the modern world with its new communication medias.

The important word in show business is business. Now lots of magicians are more interested in the "show" part than the "business" part (either because they don't know about it or because it's not their main interest with magic). I split the two in my life: I had a very nice business life which allowed me to work at exploring magic irrespective of its business returns aspects (and magic taught me things in return for the business part of my life). I'm not trying to set myself as an example to imitate, I just want to be sure that you don't do the confusion that seemed to transpire from your post. It's not magic that sells, it's the marketing and business knowledge that sells. David Blain who was launched businesswise by my departed business partner and friend Jeffrey Steiner is, as most of us know, not the best of magicians there is (I'm not suggesting that he is a bad one though and for years he was supported by Bill Kalush who is a far better magician than most of us, IMHO), but David is a very good business showman.

PS: the ones of my friends who have access to my facebook page can see private photographs of David Blaine with Jeffrey Steiner in the photo section

Yes, obscurity can not be won over night. Just ask Tiger Woods.

Whit, why don't you let one of your characters become the next one, and then we'll be at piece with that discussion...

I vote for you.

I like treading jokes, as they bring up human circumstances, places, among other things. They are fun to read but its not the joke that interests me but the places and the people in them, their ways, various trades and professions and so on and they are very imaginative.

Sorry that was meant for the other thread about, Churning Waters. Smile
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I am joining in this conversation a little late and I would like to interject if I may. I read all of the posts, I would also agree with Todd on his point about me. Blaine and Angel beat me with the comparrison factor. there are a lot of killer magicians named on this thread that very well could be the next one. I think the question is who really wants it will get it? Knowing this about myself, caused me to go into hibernation for several years within the magic world. To do some serious soul searching and have some heavy realizations. For those who might have been wondering where I have been, lol.
I am back and Boy do I have some mega big surprises. I don't know about my being the next big thing LOL, I am working much and having a blast. I found my voice and I am me. I have a market and My passion for the craft is back with a vengance. I cant recall a time where I have ever been this excited about a direction with magic. I had to go out of magic to find new tools to bring back in with me and hit the drawing board. I have really hit something very special! It works for me and my client base. For the regular world ah who knows, stranger things have happened.

Years ago I had seen at least two topics where magicians were lamenting the state of magic in youth, and particularly on YouTube.

I was going to post this in one of those topics, not disagreeing, but rather that showing in every case where information exchange increases, whether books, television, DVDs, ebooks, YouTube, and the Internet, there are always lots of young bad or mediocre magicians, but a few rise way above the others to achieve excellence.

I found this topic, and realized that what I was going to post is better suited here. It's the answer to Todd Robbin's question. And, the guy learned magic on YouTube!

Todd Robbins predition was correct.

It's Shin Lim. He rose in fame shortly after this topic was created.
