Long time Chicago restaurant and bar magician Jimmy Krzak passed away this afternoon. He worked for years at Schulien's and then ever since they closed O'Donnell's. He was one of the very few remaining practitioners of the true Chicago style bar magic. Jimmy was a great guy as well as a talented magician and performer. He will be missed.

Jimmy was a mentor, a friend, father figure and the best close up magician I have ever known. Not many in the magic community knew him. He was one of the best.

I had the HONOR of becoming friends with Jimmy - unfortunately for much too short a time. Was looking forward to dinner with him in a couple weeks in Chicago when I got to town. I've never seen someone become such a little known "legend" in such a small time as when we were working together for a month in Mexico. Everyone (especially the Senoritas!) loved him. Truly the end of an era in "chicago bar magic"...
RIP Jimmy...

I was very fortunate to have been on business travel this year in Chicago. I went to see Jim for the first time. He was outstanding as a performer and very kind to a stranger. He was most helpful to me the following months with answering emails and phone calls. I am very sad to hear this news. I met him once but he changed my way of thinking forever.
He will be missed. |

I had the priviledge of seeing him perform about a year ago at O'Donovan's. I have never, ever seen anyone do a better routine tableside. He had also lectured our magic club a few years ago. A wonderful lecture. I learned a lot - but even more watching him perform. He was so good, I went back to O'Donovan's for my birthday the following year. The food was fine, but he was the reason I went.
What a warm person Jimmy was! I learned an awful lot about routining, just by enjoying his show (it was indeed a performance) - being led from one wonder to the next is a very smooth, rapid manner. I particularly remember a wonderful cups and ball routine, using minature baseballs and a miniature baseball bat as a wand. He also had a very funny card stab, using the meanest looking switchblade I've seen anywhere - his patter was hysterical. I, too, will miss him, but remember Jimmy fondly.

Just saw this. Bummer. I enjoyed a lecture of his and made a couple of special trips to O'Donavan's to see him perform. He was talented and entertaining and a "pro" in every sense of the word.
