Greetings!

In my vision, I ask the volunteer to think of a number and to secretly write it down. They keep the paper/card they wrote on. I am immediately able to know what number they wrote down. Is there an apparatus out there to help me do that? Oh yeah, this is for a stage routine, if that helps.

(I am NOT asking for suggestions on how to force a number or otherwise influence their choice.)

The larger picture is that after they write down their number, I create a magic square that uses their number. "Do you see your number in this square? No? What is your number? Well, look closer. As you can see, if you add up all the numbers in this row ...etc"

The best way to do this is with an impression pad.

We've always relied on our Psychic Clipboard II to accomplish EXACTLY what you are wanting to do.

The volunteer keeps EVERYTHING you hand them with the PCII whereas with an IMP you need to retreive something. Both have their merits, we prefer (and have never had a problem with) the PCII.

With the routine we do, we hand the volunteer a briefcase. They walk back into the audience, open the briefcase and find a clipboard and a pen. They write on the paper on the clipboard with the pen. They return the clipboard and the pen back into the briefcase. They keep the briefcase with everything inside of it until after the end of the routine. Very clean.

I suggest the "Thought Transmitter". It involves a prop, but you can probably justify that in the routine.

A peek wallet, impression pad, ....even a paperback book - a Jay Sankey idea. Take your pick.

I think this thread belongs in the Mentalist's Section. It's hardly a routine for kids. Unless, of course, you have a funny looking puppet asking the questions and the number is a single digit from zero to 9. The child writes down the number on a large whiteboard, instructed to make it as big as he can. You can easily figure out what number he is writing from watching his actions.

Thank you all for the helpful suggestions. I am way behind on keeping up with what's new and improved.
