I tried folding laundry tonight with an Irish Pound in classic palm. Spent just as much time hanging onto it with my last two fingers as I did legitimately palming it, but it felt like good practice.
That coinvanish website (as well as a few other sources I've seen) say that you should be using the muscle on the outer edge of your hand, rather than the muscle at the base of your fingers. I just can't seem to do that though - the muscle on the outer edge simply doesn't have enough mass or volume to stop the coin from sliding out. And I can't even figure out which part of my hand to move to exercise it and make it stronger. Does anyone successfully use the muscle at the base of the fingers, or is it a bad idea to even consider compromising like that? |

David stone suggests taking a glass bottle like beer and do 3 sets of 20 vertical lifts with your pinky. This will strengthen the muscle. You can also take a rubber band, put it around your thumb and work that muscle. It will take some time to be able to palm the coin, just keep practicing. In 2 weeks or so you'll probably be able to palm it better. Perfecting it is another matter and can take many more years. Practice in both hands too. Saves a lot of time |

I've been practicing for several weeks and have indeed seen improvement - unfortunately its mostly with that incorrect base-of-the-fingers muscle. I'll need to start concentrating on using the pinky muscles more. Thanks for the pointers!

Also that "sortkwik" stuff by Lee Products is good rosin for hands. Gives you a nice tack. You can buy it for less than a buck at office supply stores.
Your CP may never be perfect, but there is no doubt in my mind it can be "good enough". To practice, I suggest starting with the coin in CP, then use fingers 2 and 3 to take the coin out of palm to fingertip rest. Then place the coin BACK into CP with the 2 fingers. That will help train your fingers where they need to have a coin in order to slip the right into that sweet spot. It's a knack, you'll get it.

Great thread...been in and out of magic for several years but my interest has been restored, especially with coin magic. Never realized I had been doing the classic palm incorrectly for all this time.

Theres nothing I can add to this thread other then Bow rosin is used by violinist to create friction between the bow hairs and the strings. without a healthy coat of rosin the bow won't make much of a sound at all (horse hair is pretty slick) also there are different types of rosin from really cheap stuff (5o cents to a dollar) to really expensive stuff (25 dollars) its basically dried tree wax
Inversely I personally don't like the rosin on the coins thing it makes them feel weird and once its on there its really hard to get off (boiling water). Try it you may like it. |
