I am looking for a do as I do trick for my kids show.
I like the idea of the plumes like mel mellers does on his new dvd, but I believe you have to make it. Has anyone got any resources where the props or similar may be able to buy. cheers |

I have this little tube and rope thing. Both place the rope into the tube and it remains suspended for the magi not the spec. Pretty cool. Forget whose it is. Might be Kandu or ... nope, don't know. The company name that ryhms I think.

Topsy Turvy bottles (or Confusing Crayons), Torn and Restored Paper (or even a Hat Tear), Barry Mitchell's Super Chicken (silk to egg), etc., could all be candidates.

Sleight King - How will you perform it? I do not know the plumes trick, but most "do as I do" routines set the volunteer up to be unsuccessful. Is this what you plan to do or will you be different?

BTW, I agree with Wes. It doesn't have to end with the volunteer failing.

The rope trick mentioned above is from practical-magic.com and is called Tubes of Kioma I believe.
Hope that helps.

I have used a standard two-deck card routine. You both find the same card in two different decks. Works okay with a child old enough to understand cards and not confuse suits. Or use picture, number, or letter cards.
You can set up the routine so the child was successful in sending you his thoughts, or in reading yours. Either way, he wins. (Best for older kids, because it's not very engaging for the audience, although I'm sure there's a way around that.) Ed |

Practical Magic also sell "Knitty Knitty Bang Bang", which starts out with the magician cleverly putting a needle through a balloon as the kid bursts his. But the tables are turned when you try again with TWO needles - this time, yours bursts and the kid's doesn't.
Great little routine. Potty |

Having the volunteer fail.
Why is everyone so afraid of that. It's called COMEDY. With any common sense at all it ends up being funny; not mean-spirited. Audiences can take a joke and they like to. It adds to the show. It does not take from it unless you're an absolute buffoon. There are so many ways to defuse the situation so you don't look like a jerk. Don't be afraid. Besides, it's not your fault. You're just trying to help. It should work just fine..... unless you're Jolly-Jim-Jiminy where everyone smiles and gets a group hug after every trick cuz we're family friendly and we don't say bad words in the show like "doo-doo" and "shucks". I'd say in that case it might not fit your character.

Kids fail enough as it is, Frank. Why not for one special hour in their honor they NEVER fail? For this moment, they are the best, especially better than me! They'll know different as soon as the party's over, the guests go home, and it's bed time.

I have my hero trick for the birthday kid. They don't all need to be that way.
Without going into great detail about how I would handle extremely rare situations I would not do the "never fail" show simply because, from my experience, it's not as fun or entertaining. By the time the show gets to the point where something might not work out for a helper, they know it's just a "show" and there's been teasing and joking going on all the while, that they are ALL very much a part of.

I personally do a lot of effects so the joke is on me. I am not saying that putting the joke on the child can’t be done. It can be of you handle it right. However, the main reason I place the joke on myself is that it is a lot more fun for the kids and they laugh even harder.
A lot of my show is based upon reactions and entertainment value. I want the kids having a great time and really enjoying it. I found by placing the joke on myself I can 1) get better laughs and reaction and 2) I empower the kid in the process. Kids then also have no problem wanting to assist as there is not hesitation that they may be embarrassed. I do Confusing Crayons (as Donald mentioned) strictly as a way for the kid to always gets it right and I always get it wrong. I play it up that ONLY a magician with YEARS of practice could ever, ever hope of doing this right. I will assist them and show them how to be an amazing magician by following everything I do. Of course what I do is silly and mixed with interactive fun. Of course the kid gets it correct and I do not. It just is hilarious in their eyes. Each time we try something different but no matter if I switch crayons or do the Goochee Goochee dance, it still does not work. In the end, it is the child who helps assist me in getting it correct. We end up working as a team. Do I think all effects have to play this way, no. It is up to your personality and character on stage. You certainly can aim the fun and joke at the child as long as they realize it is a joke and you are just kidding with them. As long as they know it is all in good fun, it goes over fine. But try a routine by reversing who is the brunt of the joke. Instead of it always being on the child, devise a routine where it is on you. It is so easy to adapt an effect around. Test it out and see how it plays. It may play even better then you had thought it would. Kyle

Hi- I Have Mel Mellers Modern Marvels Vol 1 DVD with the Do as I Do plumes. He does the routine in such a way that the child gets it wrong, but the child is never made fun of. Go to youtube and watch the clip from the DVD. The routine itself is short, but Mel's character and bits of business make this a wonderful routine. As you will see in the video, the helper is having a great time.
If you take pointers from Mel you will be able to perform a DO AS I DO routine where the child does get it wrong without being made fun of. I plan on using his advice and also plan on using the same helper with another effect following the do as I do routine. John |

Great stuff. I do feel you can do an effect like this with the jokes on the child, without it coming off as you putting the child down. I think it is all in how you go about it and present it. It is about your attitude and personality and how you treat the child when on stage.

Try a Tear - No tear paper but you do it without looking at the kid... On your end it is a torn and restored paper... as you go through the routine you pay no attention to the child not being able to tear the paper... After you restore the paper you turn to the child and praise him for doing exactly what you wanted him to do.... If done correctly it is a very funny routine.... Something like Whit Haddens Linking Rings routine
