I think he's referring to the week in which the 25th usually falls, but not necessarily the actual day (25th).

Depending how Thanksgiving falls there can be nearly a weeks difference between the two holidays thus making a shorter shopping season for retailers. Since the reason for the season in our current culture is to buy as much crap between the two dates it only makes sense to have as long as a shopping season as possible.

Actually if we went back to the old tradition and celebrated Twelfth Night instead of Christmas (Jan 6) we'd get two more weeks of the all important shopping in.
Christmas traditionally kicked of the twelve days of Christmas ending with Twelfth Night. If retailers all go together and encouraged people to give gifts on each night of the 12 days consumerism would soar and all of our financial worries in this country would be over. At least until you opened your credit card bill in February.

Jan 6th has more to do with the "Epiphany" than anything.

But it doesn't make a difference to me, I would never belong to any organization that tries to change or control other people's beliefs. Fool me once... |

Never believed there was a "Kwanza".
Christmas for me is an excuse to see my family (all married with children and so forth) at least once in the year. Really more a hollow chocolate Santa than a baby in a manger thing. I wont bash my Christian friends, but wont go to church for anything other than weddings and funerals. We Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October, the Americans in November. If I time it right I visit North Dakota and get extra turkey. |

You know, I've seen a number of comments about the founding of Kwanzaa. It's a foreign holiday to me (literally, seems only to be anything close to big deal in the USA) and I never heard of it until sometime in the 1990s. I could be way off base here, but I've formed the impression that the founder (Ron / Maulana Karenga) of Kwanzaa back in the 1960s said some things that were over the top, probably part of some marketing campaign to sell the holiday to the masses. Apparently, more recently he has been quoted as saying: "People think it's African, but it's not. I came up with Kwanzaa because black people wouldn't celebrate it if they knew it was American. Also, I put it around Christmas because I knew that's when a lot of Bloods were partying." But, hey, it must be the only holiday with its own official home page! http://www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org/

And, yeah, the founder of Kwanzaa was convicted of felony assault and false imprisonment in the 1970s.

To be fair didn't they schedule Christmas for practically the same reason?

Dude what I meant was it was scheduled around a Winter Solstice time because of all the celebrations in the first place. Let me look into it.
