Rolling Stone just put out its list of the top ten albums of the decade:
And I have heard precisely zero of them. I am out of touch, but I don't feel too bad about it. John

I know who Bob Dylan is.

You've probably heard "Paper Planes" from Kala by M.I.A. as it was used in Slumdog Millionaire and had a lot of airplay both before and after. And if it sounds like something you heard 25+ years ago, you would be correct (it samples from the song Straight to Hell by The Clash).

I think I might be able to stomach about two of those cd's. But none of them would be on my decade list.

John, if you are out of touch, I am glad to be with you. I think rolling stone might also be, but I have no idea what passes as "good" music these days.
I like radiohead, and dylan is dylan, but the rest....

The girl looks at me and says "how do you want them laced". Stupid me didn't know there was really much more than one way so I simply responded "through the holes?". Buying Converse All stars may alone have made me out of touch but the lace thing clinched it. Then I went to buy our truck a couple years ago. After a divorce, bankrupsy and general poor economic health for many I got pretty used to the NO. My new wife and I went to just look at a truck on a whim when the Ford and every other auto maker was doing badly, she suggested we see if they are despirate enough to sell me a truck. So we go through the process, I just wanted them to do the credit check and jump to the "sorry" part so we could go to lunch. Well they need a price to put with the thing and yada yada yada. Long story a bit shorter I qualify, but am still not sure. Guy comes out and says "good news is your qualified through Ford Motor Credit, and that is another $1,000 rebate". I kept waiting for the "bad news is..." but it never came. Girl who sold us the truck was about 26 years old. She asked me what was wrong, that I looked curiously somber for the occasion and I said, "I sort of feel like Charlton Heston, when he wakes up in the field and the Ape is up on the horse". This was greeted with a pleasant smile and a blank stare. NO CLUE what I was saying and to make it worse I had to pay my wife a geek dollar for making the reference in the first place! So John, I am happy to join you in "out of touch" land.

Not *exactly* related, but my wife and I bough a new minivan a few years ago from a salesman from India. He had a thick accent. We were 'just looking' but decided we would accept his deal. However, we had not brought the car we were going to trade in. We described it, and he gave as an amount he would give for it - sight unseen. The last thing he said before we left (we were going to bring the car in the next day) was, "It better not be a Flintstones car!" This reference, combined with his cute accent, and we could barely contain our laughter.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I made reference to "A man's got to know his limitations" a few weeks back, and no one in the group recognised it. I assume at least some of you lot do.

When I was a kid our public tv channel and even the commerical ones used to play old films from the 40s & 50s overnight. We used to watch them as there was nothing else on and found some of them were pretty ***ed good.
As well as introducing us to some good films, quotes, actors, books and music, it gave us some cultural ties to share with out parents and friends. Without discussing these films I might never have found out my mother met Ava Gardner and my father had a zoot suit and one of my friends was a complete Orson Welles freak. Sadly, only the public channel still does this, and in a limited way. Kids today will be able draw their cultural influences from Proactive and the Ab-cruncher...

I went to a Karaoke night (it is big in Asia) a few weeks ago and put up "welcome to the jungle". The majority of the group were under 30 Foreigners in Taiwan ie western people. They had not heard of the song.
Out of the list I know 2 and I have 1 which FYI is Radiohead. |

I work with younger staff. Occasionally, if the Beatles come on, I'll ask them to name the band. More often than not, they don't know. I once tried to impress an assistant by telling her I did music and photography for ICP (Insane Clown Posse). She asked "Weren't they big in the '90s?". Ugh!
