When we think about “scientists”
When we think about “scientists,” most of us probably envision honest people toiling away in the lab or the field, accumulating and analysing data in order to test theories, leaving their personal biases at home, scrupulously considering any confounding data or theories and wilfully distancing themselves from the political implications of their research. How quaint. Scientists are human - they have their biases, presuppositions and 'issues' just like all the rest of us.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Dr. Mengele was a scientist. So were Albert Einstein, Louis Pasteur, and Edward Jenner (who developed the first vaccine.)
All were scientists, yet I don't think any of us would tar them with the same brush.

This will sound foolish, but I am one of the most honest people you will ever meet*. Foolish becasue if you don't know me, you have no reason to believe it. If you do know me then you understand. I tell my students loud and clear to never NEVER fudge data. Work hard to explain anomalies, and if you can't, then at least explain where experimental process may have led them astray. There is little to be gained in dishonest science and invariably the perpetrator will be caught in the lie. Reference: cold fusion and the Piltdown man.
Yes, there are scientists who out and out lie. Just as every profession has its' examples of detractors. Clowns have John Wayne Gacey, The clergy (mostly good honest people) takes a hit every time one goes off and does something inappropriate. Teachers are all given the cynical eye after one has a tryst with a student, and not all politicians are crooks. Sorry for the rave, but guess what, we are all human, and it p!sses me off the way our society blames entire professions for the misdeeds of a few. Soapbox over. Class Dismissed. * Yes I do lie on stage, but that is me playing the role of a magician. (Also While I am very honest I am also human and imperfect).

I can take your theory further. I MYSELF have been a less than perfect person. I strive to be better now. To paint me or anyone who has made mistakes with only the brush from our past is indeed unfair as well. Not unusual or shocking mind you but indeed people can even change within themself, let alone within a profession.
I will say that "science" in general is getting to the point that it seems a bit suspect, but have not turned the corner to be distrusted by any means. Distrusted only because of the way it has to be conducted in the real world of money.

It p!sses me off the way the scientific community protects the few scientist that lie, distort and falsify data and results. Why wouldn't they want to expose and denounce the ones that are giving them a black eye? By not policing them selves it make the all look guilty!
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

Science itself is neither good or bad, it can be used for good or evil. However it is probably the most dangerous thing on earth in the hands of evil men. Unfortunately science has been used more often for evil than good and so one must be very wary. As Anthony West explains in his book. “In a world of hydrogen bombs, bacteriological warfare and other progressive horrors, it is self evident that knowledge is dangerous.” The idea that we the people can trust scientists just because they are scientists is a very dangerous idea. Yet that is what most people tend to do.

Imagine how long this thread would last if we applied the same logic to religion that some here have pointed at science. "Well that guy blew up a clinic." "Well that guy is a terrorist." "Well that guy knows Obama." "Well that guy likes altar boys."
What a ridiculous premise for condemnation.

Payne has form for putting words into people’s mouths. (whether they agree to it or not) His points are rather less to do with the issues and more to do with vicious and unfair personal attacks. I wish he would get out the habit and also that other habit he has developed of picking his nose and eating it.
