Hi everyone!
I was just looking at the list of effects I perform and I just realized just how many Sankey effects I had in my list. Incredible! I own many, many, just so many DVDs (so much money spent )of various types of magicians. From guys like Regal, Colombini, Osterlind, Ammar, Aronson, Bannon, Evans, Guastaferro, Jay, Malone, Sanvert, Maven, Pavel, Hallas, Banachek, Kuffs, etc. So over years, I've collected effects from all of those guys and I've putted them in my repertoire. When I looked at my list, 2 names stood out: Sankey and Colombini. But I had more Sankey. So I started thinking. His Sankey that good? The answer is YES, he must be! What is your opinion on Sankey? Great or average? If you answer great, what's your favorite effects from him? Here's some of my personal best: 1. Just Imagine 2. Shufflecutdeal 3. Fade Away 4. In a Flash 5. Symbolic 6. Sankey's Choice 7. Papperclipped 8. Spontaneous Combustion 9. Third Eye 10. Stop Sign |

If he had only released five dvds, he would be considered one of the all time greats. But with like 55 dvds out there, he released many mediocre one, so that hurts him
Stuff like Paperclipped Mr. Clean Coins across Stirring silver Back in time Holy Moly are really great, but a lot of his fillers are weak(which is 90% of his monthly releases) for one reason or another All I know is that guys like Bill Malone or Gregory Wilson (and a few others) have never disappointed me but Sankey has. So I choose not to take the chance on him, pretty much ever again |

I'd say these are my favourite Sankey dvds so far:
-Front Row Sankey -Real Work on Restaurant and Bars -Best Of 1-3 -Boris Pocus -Secret Files |

This is a debate of quality vs quantity IMHO.
Jay is giving us a choice. It is a numbers game. So he is great! Back in time and Paperclipped as well as just imagine. |

I liked the old Sankey when he was interested in mastering and sometimes varying some classic plots. I enjoyed his sleight of hand ability and his willingness to tackle the tough stuff.
Don't get me wrong, I like Jay as a magician and as a person from the few brief times I've met him. I'm just not a huge fan of his excessive output to the "budding Magis" but hey, to each there own. I am a fan , however, of his work published by Richard Kaufman. Fish |

Paperclipped really isn't his. I do like some of his material though.

His first couple vhs tapes were real good. most of the stuff that is popular came from them and has been re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-put on all the other DVDs in one form or another and re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-sold to make more money.
He's a real creative guy but over-did it. He uses cereal box theory to sell, which is basically, if you take up more room on the shelves than anyone else you'll sell more crap than anyone else. Sankey-tized 1,2 is all you need from Jay. Perhaps a bit harsh but most of his popular stuff was from way back at the very beginning. No kidding. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself. Paperclipped Case in point...That list came from someone's post above and ALL THOSE came from those first two videos except for holy moly.

His book Beyond Secrets is PHENOMINAL. I consider it a must-read.
Awesome awesome book especially for those beginning to understand magic theory. Jay's thoughts in so many subjects are thought provoking. His L&L DVD set is good too. |

Frank is dead on. Sankeytized and Sankey Pankey are all you really need. There is some incredible stuff in there. The last 10 years or so seems to be a TON of fluff.

Too much poor stuff for me to take him serious anymore, it's like he's trying to cash in on anything that comes into his head. The 99 trick page on his website left a very sour taste, I don't like being mislead, you BS me once and never again.
I'll stick with people who never disappoint, always top drawer, like Malone, Bannon, Aldo, Harry Lorayne, even a bit Daryl. |

I think he's brilliant. I do agree that he has put out a lot of filler, but COME ON. Back in Time is probably one of the most powerful effects of all time. Paperclipped is also incredible. He is a great thinker.

It is interesting to watch the deterioration of his published material. His early stuff was FANTASTIC! Since...mehh.
If he would have stopped with his early works, he would probably be thought of as one of the best without question. As it stands, his work has been diluted down quite a bit. I, however, really like Jay Sankey's stuff nonetheless; his watered down stuff is still FAR superior to anything I could come up with...and he is brilliant performer and lecturer. |

I do think he's brilliant. A great thinker. but I NEVER look at any of his material any more in any way shape or form and it's not my fault. it's his for misleading, over-hyping, re-hashing, etc. I just don't believe anything I hear from sankey or fans. I don't blame myself.
And really, once you have a couple hours of close-up material, how much more do you really need? Especially from the same individual. The marketing method probably earned him tons of money and tons of beginners as followers but as you can see I think he lost a lot of respect from magicians familiar with his early works. Still, a creative guy nonetheless. You can't deny that.

I can honestly say I have never seen the guy or his work and only know of him from posts on here! Maybe one day I'll look into the earlier work that Frank and Pep refer too!

The early stuff is good, Mickey. I agree with Frank on this topic. Hey, he saw a way to make money and he capitalized- as is another guy in Toronto right now. It's hard to blame them, but it's not my cup of tea.I have a bit of an issue with guys taking existing things, changing the props and re- releasing it for profit. I'm not saying these guys are necessarily doing anything wrong, I just don't really like it. But that's just me.

I'm with ya Fish! I love capitalism but simply changing the packaging, color or wording shouldn't necessarily constitute "New and Improved"!

I would still recommend 'Front Row' without hesitation. Granted, it is one of the older titles, but what an all round close up DVD.
A variety of achievable, powerful material, and real performances in a restaurant. I have not picked up any of his recent stuff (and there has been so much of it!), but then I am not from the demographic that Jay is aiming at (my opinion only). Still, you can't deny the man's many contributions... Respect to all Charlie |
