I've meet Jay and seen him lecture on several occassions. He's a class act and has mad chops. All in all a wonderful human being with an abundance of ideas. It's refreshing!

I am very new here. I am also a hobbyist. But I think Jay is super. I have purchased several of Jay's DVD's. I find them very helpful. Here is an example of why I like Jay. As a business man, there was a mix up in my order, and when I phoned Toronto, Jay answered the phone personally. We had a very good conversation. He was very helpful and apologetic. And he sent me a free DVD along with the one that got lost in paper work. I find his teaching skills to be very very good. I like how he takes old ideas (like copper, silver) and marries it with very fresh approaches, like "holy moly". On his monthly news letter (and web site) he is constantly giving away free tricks. To someone who is new to magic... Jay is excellent. His trick "Back in Time" is just brilliant and I have done that trick over and over... and it never ceases to entertain! I like Jay.

I am in awe of Jay Sankey, he's a fountain of creative magic and a really excellent teacher. I have to slow some of his moves occasionally and "step" through them frame-by-frame to really understand the nuances. And in my view, the mindless techno music only gets in the way. But his brilliance shines through undiminished. I (and many others) are better magicians because of what we've learned from him. I recently read his book, "Beyond Secrets", an articulate, thoughtful and moving collection of his thoughts on magic, practice and performance. This book has helped me to resolve some of my performance hangups. I am in Mr. Sankey's debt.
I'm as real as you think I am

Hey Magicfish,
Which one? Tannens's or Magie Montreal? I cherish those memories as I saw the pass done fabulously well for the very first time in my life demonstrated by no others than Jay himself. I pick it up from there and developed a very good shift if I may say so. I've used Jay's materials very often and it never fail to be sensational...when I do it right. Yves |

Jay is amazing. Even his "off" tricks would be considered great if we didn't have his stellar stuff with which to compare them. Whether or not every routine he puts out is the best thing ever (and there really can't be more than one best thing ever, now can there?), Jay is unbelievably skilled, very entertaining (I find him hysterically funny, on a par with David Williamson, Tom Mullica, Bob Sheets, and Bill Malone), and amazingly creative.
I would give a body part to be half as good as he is technically or creatively. (Not that anyone would want one of my body parts, but you get my meaning...) Thankfully, I have much better hair, I am much more handsome (but that's true compared to just about anyone, not just Jay--except for maybe Channing Pollack) and I'm over six feet tall. That combination has taken me a long way.

I'm with Frank and Pepka on this one. I really enjoyed Jay's earliest work, but have considered him more of an 'idea' man over the past few years. I've bought a couple of things but found them to be pretty rough and in need of a lot of work to get them to the point where they were a 'worker' for me. And even then, I didn't keep the routines in my act. He's a great creative mind though and a great person on top of that.

I agree with lots of posts that Sankey's early work was better then his latest releases, and I gave up on sankey because of being dissapointed with the repetition of his material over the years...
I'm also a marketing specialist, and from sankey's materials and website appearence I don't think he is reaching for me...his target market is teenagers and youngsters and I don't fit in that category anymore lol!!!! |

My biggest thing that I do not like about most Sankey effects is that they seem incomplete. I constantly find myself watching his effects waiting for the final phase, but not seeing one. There are of course a few exceptions, seeing as some routines do not need extra phases. For example mr.clean coins across, three coins go across, the trick serves that purpose. The majority of his effects however just feel incomplete.

Jay is amazing! I don't do many of his tricks, but he is always original. I'm still waiting for a moment where I can throw chan-ping han into a routine.
BTW I messaged jay's web site with "tell Jay he rocks!" and got a responce from him 20 minutes later saying than you. |

I also had a similar situation with Jay's website. I contacted him, and he responded within 5-10 minutes. Lightning quick ......... just like his pass.

I think Jay Sankey is one of the best modern magicians at our time. Of course some of his works are classics but he's just trying to give us choices and he wants to be a good mentor for anyone (especially card trick).
At times he talks too much, but everyone's got their own style. So I enjoy watching every single DVD of his. Not the best, but one of the best.

Sankey is one of the smartest, most creative magicians of close-up ever

Jay rocks. This garbage about to many tricks is just that. People could learn a great deal from someone so humble and talented.I trust the Sankey brand...and know he cares about his customers. I weed through the items that do not interest me. I don't complain. I own several different DVD's and completely happy with my purchases. There are several effects on each DVD that I own that are strong and in my mind, even ONE trick that you use on each DVD makes it worth the money.I want to encourage Jay to continue.

Consider the amount of effort that one physically spend on creating the 'outcome' Sankey designs, he's a genius!
