So what do I need to do when I have an idea of a gaff card and a trick? It is a funny and simple one, but where do I have to go? Should it requires me to at least to have a prototype, how can I make it or to convince any dealer?
Do I just send the idea in words and then let them to decide whether it is a sell or not. How to protect the idea so someone cannot steal it and publish it under his own name? The trick will use gaff cards and a gimmick for each performance. Thanks.

Its been discussed before here on the Café and I would suggest as said before to PM 1 or 2 members here who will take a look at this for you and advise you from there. It may not be a new idea, it may not be marketable, or....it is and they will tell you. It also reduces the risk of you getting taken for an original idea of yours.

Usually simplest to make a mock up and make sure the thing plays for audiences.
Then... after your routine works for you for your audiences - consider whether you want others doing your trick. Hint on gaffs with odd faces a digital camera, photoshop, a color photocopier etc all make good images on paper and it's not biggie to glue together something that audiences will accept as passable to start your process. Best wishes with your project, Jon

Thanks Jon. So I can design my own gaff for the face and back side of the card on a paper first?

Quote: It's the same thing with publishing any magic effect. How do you know they won't take credit for it? Simple, it would destroy their reputation if it came out and it makes more business sense to take you on for the long haul and publish all your work and keep a good working relationship, rather than stealing a single effect and have a ruined reputation.

Ok thank you. That makes a lot of sense actually.
So, who can I contact?

Unfortunately, Neil Martin Lester passed away, so the site might be offline for some time, but if someone takes over http://www.cardsbymartin.com/store/ would be a good place to get gaffs. Alternatively, you can try contacting http://www.card-shark.de/
Who you contact about publishing the complete trick depends entirely on the feel and ingenuity of the trick itself. Jay Sankey wouldn't sell anything heavy on sleights. Papercrane is all about innovation. You need to get a feel for the publishers out there in order to make a right choice. Can you think of a trick that you believe has some sort of similarity with yours? (Presentation, hook, method, anything) Whoever published that is probably your best bet. |
