I practiced the muscle pass breifly today until the half dollar made the ball of my thumb raw. I also can get it to hop about one inch... Is this typical for a muscle pass newbie?

i am also wondering, i have had no luck with this move, can some people just not do this due to physical reasons, small ect....?
or is it just practice? |

Let the callouses begin! You just started and you got it to jump an inch, bravo, took me a little longer than that, and yes it is just practice! You keep doing the same thing for a week, and it will jump 2 inches,3 weeks,3inches,and so on and so fourth.
Make sure your using larger coins,it's easier when you are first starting out. If you want to make you self feel better, get a casino chip or any type of plastic chip, they fly!!!!!!! Good luck

I use the muscle pass a lot. Sometimes I just use it as a gag, the "antigravity coin". I also use it as a penatraion of a specs hand. Practice, practice, practice .

"No pain, no gain." Yep, this one WILL sting for awhile. You will probably be only able to do it about 20-30 times a day for awhile until the callouse toughens up, then more height will come once the spot is "harder", letting the coin slide with almost no friction to slow down it's launch.
Redstreak, where can one find info on how to use it as a penetration of the spec's hand? |

Yup pain pain pain....expect nothing more than an inch for about a week or so of constant practice. And I mean everywhere you go, everything you do practice.
You might also try a japanese technique of taping or waxing two coins together and muscle passing them both.....they use it for working on height (sort of weight training) but it might also work well for over exerting the muscles early and then trying to do the move with one hand...... |

My friend John Mahood is only 17 and does the best muscle pass I have ever seen. He just does it so flawlessy and can make it go up the air or can pass it from hand to hand to hand and keep doing it without ever messing it up

Hey, I still can't use the thing and you all know how long I've been playing with coins. It's a matter of finding the place where a coin fits that you can pop it from.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I have just acquired the ability to muscle pass. I can do it best with a a silver dollar. I get about 8-10 inches. And yes my hand does hurt. It is all about repetition and practice until you find the right spot. And yes you do get a nice callouse on your hand. I have heard of the Japanese way of "training for the muscle pass with multiple coins so you can get more height to the pass. Well, now off to practice with some half dollars...

gforster, good question, I need some help on this too. Another thing that I am working on is doing two at once, I do an "instant replay" kind of thing, it looks nice.

If any of you get the chance to see Shoot, he'll show you the subtle applications. Also the write of Jet Coins in Genii uses the muscle pass for a coins across.
If you can get your hands on the new DVD Cultural Exchange, do, because it has Shoot demonstrating his muscle stuff. Fun to do and not that hard too (not about distance but about accuracy). |

Just bought some pure silver half dollars which have a bit more of an edge on them really helps getting that extra bit of pop on the M.P.
Couple of things I have noticed which may be of use. The best way to get the coin to jump is to consciously tightening all the muscles in your arm so you feel your bicep tighten, your forearm tighten imparting all the energy in to the M/P. The other point is to think of a pop sensation rather than a squeeze. Something else I am trying to develop in my own M/P is lessening the get ready. I have in the past always carefully placed the coin into M/P position. I have recently found that by stretching my thumb and pinky back as far as they will go (Downwards) then relaxing the hand again, this generally(with a bit of practice)gets the coin into the correct position and keeps the hand much flatter throughout improving the effect. Hope this helps Chris |

to be honest. i can do it rather well. however i cannot do a regular casino chip. i honestly believe that there is a sort of hands which are best for coin magic. for example my mum can classic palm better than me and i have been practicing years and she has just had a go at it!!!!!!!!!

Kainoa,
Where is a good place to look for the Cultural Exchange dvd? Tried a couple online stores and it doesn't show up. |

James right now it is only available through Shoot or Apollo at their lectures.
After their lectures, it will be sold at http://www.bobkohlermagic.com exclusively from what I have read. |

Look I do the muscle pass alot but you should be cautious the evidence is not in about what long term use of the muscle pass will do to your hand. let's hope that when we are in our later years we are not in alot of pain because we made coins jump like mexican jumping beans. SO BE WARNED that said stay tuned for more muscle pass stuff from me Joe

Practice will bear fruit.
A friend of mine asked Shoot Ogawa about the muscle pass, "Some get it in a day, some in a week, some, in a year." It will take longer for some, shorter for others. Some things are easier for others. Practice hard, and you will appreicate it more, because you worked for it. Also, a tip from Reed McCLintock, use a wooden nickel to practice your muscle pass. The callouse won't be as bad, (more smooth than the ones you get with just practicing with the silver coins.) I found it helped. Give it a try. |

Joe, you're a madman! What we don't do for our craft! It's good to see you back Joe.
I've been practicing the MP for a few years, off and on. I have the muscles in my hand built up to where i can definitely pop the coin out every time, but it looks like I didn't train them right and the muscle opposite my thumb is not as strong as the one under the thumb. The Result: the coin pops out at an angle. Any ideas how to fix it (other than turning my hand so it looks like someone is twisting my arm!) |
