Some day folks will realize that the Stewart James books are masterpieces on every front.
With the first book now OOP, and not a lot of the second pair (with index) left, these will not be around forever. I think what folks don't realize is that there was a lot more money and resources behind these books than that which Mr. Minch could provide alone as publisher, and that they've been subsidized heavily in their creation and production. This set should sell for two and a half times what they currently cost, (or did cost in the case of the first book) based on the size and quality of the books themselves. Will a re-print be possible without the additional support of the series benefactor?........ not possible without a huge price increase. Will the series benefactor be interested in another run?.........based on a variety of factors, along with the fact that the series has been a difficult sell......highly unlikely. Is the series benefactor a young man who will be around forever?..........definitely not! That the second set of two books is still available on the Hermetic web site for $160.00 is, quite frankly, amazing in and of itself!..........that shipping is free is beyond my comprehension (these books are huge and heavy). What are you waiting for?!....... the first book "Stewart James In Print" is already long gone! |

Silverking,
Your words about these books couldn't be more true. Masterpieces of book binding, paper quality and of course, simply a staggering collection of the life's work of a Master. I wonder if the small book "The Essential Stewart James" actually had an adverse effect on sales of the larger volumes. While it may have been a wonderful mechanism in one sense to ease people into the larger works, the word "essential" might have been misleading. I have read quite a few posts that have stated that this book would "save" people from the mammoth real collection. But, what might be termed essential does not mean this is ALL you you should explore. I am awed by the quality of magic this Master created and folks, there are MIRACLES, LOTS OF MIRACLES, that are waiting to be discovered. Sadly, Silverking, I think you are correct in your conjecture that a reprint will never happen. That's a shame, but I see as you do that it would be a loss for Stephen Minch if these would ever be printed at their current price. And yes, the price IS ridiculously low. People, you don't HAVE to have Stewart James in Print to enjoy the James File. You really might want to consider picking these up before they go OOP and command HUGE prices on the after market. Besides, you are missing out on some of the most diabolical methods and hard hitting effects EVER in magic. And prices DO soar. Look at the Collected Works of Alex Elmsley as one example. I am seeing this set go for really larger dollars and they are going nowhere but UP in value. EACH of the Cervon Notebooks went for 200.00 USD. The whole James File is selling for 160.00. So, why have the Cervon books sold better it seems than the James books? I wish I knew the answer. Not saying here that Cervon is inferior in any way to James and CERTAINLY not vice-versa. So, any thoughts folks? Ahimsa, Vlad |

Just a note that "In Print" still shows up on the big auction site for little more than the cost of the books when new.
They show up less and less often these days, but there are still opportunities for those who are interested in owning the entire set containing thousands of tricks, most all of those tricks flying so far under the radar that you're able to open any of the three books to any random page, and find a trick that likely hasn't been performed in decades, if ever. I admit I'm a huge fan of Jame's, the man. Much of my thinking on the books is framed by the fact that I consider James himself as one of about 4 creators of magic that qualify as brilliant beyond words. I don't think it's possible that we'll ever see another like him. (I believe that the often repeated comment about much of James material being brilliant, but not practical to perform live is behind the general attitude towards these books. A comment BTW, that's totally without foundation and generally false). |

Agreed about SJ books and I doubt if "The Essential..." had much effect other than to help sell the bigger books. Anyone who loves reading about magic would want to own everything written by James or any of his co-conspirators after reading "The Essential...." IMO.

Motown- Good choice on the Endfield stuff. I just picked them up for a song, and am working through them while I wait for my copy of Greater Magic to arrive.
Also, going back through some classic works right now (Erdnase, Hugard's ECT) and picking through the collected Ibidem when it strikes me. |

I'm still working on the Neale book and the Jon Allen book. There is one book I highly recommend checking out is Bob Wagners' The Master Notebook of Magic. Truly deserving of the accolades it got when it first came out. All workable ideas..the ideas on the card index are priceless. It's a shame he is no longer with us, amazing man.

I found a well preserved copy of Ricky Jay's Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women from 1981 at a used book sale at my local public library. It cost me a whopping $3.00. It's been fun to read.
