An article by Massimo...
What Does it Take to be a Mentalist? Now, there’s a question. This is something that a lot of the younger magicians ask my fellow mentalists and me. We try to answer the question the best that we know how, but the answers never seem to be said correctly and as it should be. The young magicians find it hard to follow or understand what we try to say. We have pondered, considered and brainstormed this question and it is hard to understand. We have tried to put it in a recipe form, a scientific equation, and even in a formula; nothing seems to make a dent in the process. After, many years of thinking and many man-hours of struggling with the question, I am attempting to formulate a universal answer or at least a start to the answer. READ MORE

I think the article missed one important element:
for a mentalist to truly be perceived as one of real powers, the mentalist needs to "live and breathe as if". Meaning people will see a mentalist that is acting part time as a mentalist as someone just doing tricks that they have not figured out the method. The mentalist "living as if" is percieved as someone that may truly be able to accomplish bizzare and paranormal feats. It is that doubt between the two that sets apart the good ones from the great ones.

I didn't read the whole article, but..I would say few things. First, mentalism is about the spectator. It's about the spectators goals, desires and feelings. It's not about,"oohh look what kind of cool stuff the mentalist can do". I forget who said it, but..magic is about the magician- true mentalism is about the spectator and his or her thoughts.
Second, mentalism is about dealing with a spectators most inner-thoughts and feelings. You need to respect that and remember to tread lightly. Lastly, I think that a good mental performer needs to make the audience entertain the possibility of some kind of unique phenomena is happening. Open that door to the mystical ( old school mentalists like Nelson ) or the psychological ( like a Derren Brown )..then you've created wonder. A very rare form of entertainment that they'll most likely never forget. I know that I am posting this in a beginners forum. Most newcomers that I've seen doing mentalism, really aren't that good. They need more performing experience before they branch out into mentalism.
Self concept is destiny..

It was an interesting article; thanks very much for posting it! I find it's hardest to pull off with people who know me (family and friends). It's much easier dealing with those that don't, since they're much more likely to take me at face value. When I can spook the bejazus out of my husband? Now, that's when I know I'm doing it right. |

Well you don't have to be crazy to be a mentalist, but it does help. Actually mentalism is one area of magic that depends very heavily on the magician working the audience. All good magic shows should be about the magician, not the magic, but mentalism falls flat when it tries to depend on the effects. Mentalism is something you create in the minds of your audience, thus it involves you quickly grasping hold of their imaginations and molding them, leading them where you want them to go. Raido was once called the theater of the mind, mentalism is just that.

We all know the most important key in a Magic show is COMMUNICATION with the audience; the more you are close to the ones who are looking at your art the more you have to manage them with words and gestures.
