Richard,
Thank you for your kind words! yes, I would love to have a peony bouquet like you made for the Musical in my collection one day The fact that they have used them in 100's of shows and they still look like new only shows your excellent craftmanship. Fabrice, David Copperfield Death saw is very different from my Couch sawing! As a matter of fact I see no resemblance apart from the effect that a person is cut in 2! Marcus, Yes, I'm Rafael |

Rafael I'm not saying your illusion is the same like Death saw Illusion , no absolutly ,
what I'm saying is: now you know this mr tuxedo, but I think is not the only one using your illusion, I remember somewhere one guy using your illusion after a Death saw Illusion, but I forget who is this guy, do you know him? thanks |

Rafael, my friend - many of us know the frustration and anger that surrounds exact knock-offs and agree with you that fighting them by any means (legal) is part of the magic world.
And the winner (who unhappily ends up with spoils rather than the deserved unspoiled invention) is often the poorer at the end of the process. One has but to watch the two videos to understand the difference between a mechanical magician who buys ab act and a dedicated and talented magic professional who has invested a life in making magic happen. And investing a life -- not just cash -- is what you have done. Your polish and acumen on stage surpasses the "tricks" you present. Your persona during presentation is what sells your magic -- even though your dress and presentation of each effect are unique -- you can rest assured that any copyist, including the the above cited performer -- will never understand that thew copied performance will never be anything but a pale shadow of a fully talented creation and presentation such as yours. I know of the years and time you have invested in working on character and presentation as a necessity to art -- not just tricks. That is something knock-offs never discover. While you have every right and cause to take severe umbrage at this blatant rip-off, I do not think it is worth a lot of energy and kharmatic spirit to pursue it at the expense of ongoing creativity. When we first met at Jeff's, you may remember that I was in the licensed image garment industry, one of the most criminally ripped fields in the world. The best solution to knock-offs was to invest only in the level of legal protection that made sense economically to defend brand reputation -- BUT -- to understand ANYTHING GOOD will be ripped of rather quickly -- and the best defense is to be introducing something different, better and more creative, somethiing that inevitably renders the rip-off into a shoddy imitation that is not even flattering -- just an imitation.

Nothing much to add Raphael, except that I really enjoyed your promo video.
As annoying as it is, it proves that you have great talents and that the other with no brains have only one way to try to look as good as you, by copying. You're cool, stay that way ! |

Just to chip in a little bit
Actually I already noticed this long ago...but just curious cos I really respect you Rafael cos you really help the magiccafe with many valueable advice, you r the best! But since I read your post about the copying issue.....just curious cos I notice your write up of your dove act http://www.rafael.be/r08_dove_E.htm is very similar to James Cielen, http://dovemagic.com/types_of_shows.htm with just some changes here & there....hence I am not sure if is coinicidence? Anyway hope to see your dove act 1 day P/S: Tuxedo is a very nice guy, I met him couple of times & compete twice with him...if you e-mail him, I am sure he will sort it out nicely, no worries |

I have never heard of you Raf, but I must say I was quite impressed. Its shame that it took something crappy like this to happen to get my attention. I know it sucks that someone ripped you off, but rest assured the cream rises to the top. Your act is your act. Even though someone tried to duplicate you, they will never be you. You have "it". The poser doesn't. I wouldnt lose any sleep over it, and move on knowing that you are light years ahead of this clown.

Hey Raf,
I'll put him on the list of people to "visit" the next time I go to Thailand. It really is sad the state of magic these days but I'm here for ya brother. Jason |

I really hate these thieves, I just cant stand to see them. Some young thieves did the Blue Man Group pipe act here on tv and I'm just getting mad when those audiences clap for them. Doesn't matter if its our art or something else, these people are thieves and must be treated accordingly ! Of course it hurts more when its our art...
I really feel what you feel Rafael, we all know the facts and we are with you. These thieves are all going to be punished one day.... |

Rafael, I could not see your video but I feel bad that you have been copied. What do you think should Mr. Tuxedeo have done to not make you feel bad:
1. Buy the illusion from you? How much would that cost? 2. Figure out the working and make his own illusion and send you a mail asking you for the permission. Would it be free if not how much would that cost? 3. If I asked you for your permission to perform it, will you give it to me? Is it free if not how much would that cost? 4. Would I be able to perform the illusion on TV with this permission? 5. Is he doing something unethical or is he doing something illegal? 6. If it is illegal why don't you sue him? |

There are a lot of topics (again) on the subject of copycats/ stealing acts. Instead of crying, what are we, the honest magicians, going to do about it? For years now people cry out someone stole their act and we have not come any closer to any solution, not even tried to do something. An international blacklist of magicians, an international registration of magic... Everyone has ideas but so far you only have proven that magicians can't work together to at least try something about this.
I could copy all your acts and all you would do is make a topic about it on Themagiccafe??? EVI |

Magicerik, you are correct there is little being done.
Here is what I do. 1) I let it be known if someone rippiing off an act or a trick. A lot of people do not know it is ripped off if they do not study magic. Some do not even care. 2) I let it be known if I have to work backstage with someone that they have ripped something off. I am professional and I have to work with them but I do not have to support them. 3)If I am judging a contest and their is a blatant rip off, that contestant might as well withdraw from the contest. 4)I tell bookers for conventions about rip off artists. 5)I do not support rip off artists. I will grant you it is not much but maybe in some small way I can help to make a difference. Richard

Yes Richard. And I would add (to point 5):
I will never buy a used prop from a "magician" (I wouldn´t call him so), who also has rip offs AND I will not sell anything to him - no matter how much I would get. 3 days ago, that was the case. |

Maharajademagia,
I created the couch sawing for my own show so it's not for sale or copy! Erik, Don't worry, I do everything I can to stop people from stealing my creations so this topic on Themagiccafe is just the tip of the iceberg.... Update: Hereby the reply from Mr Tuxedo Magic theatre thailand (I send him a email to kindly but firmly ask him to stop using my creation in his show and to stop using it in his advertising) Dear Rafael First of all, Please accept my apologized Ok, I will cut this illusions , Promotional picture in website for instants. However, before this I just put only some this idea to our performance not all of your act. and when I have show I insert sound wording to give credit of you, too. ("This Illusions Idea belong Rafael magician of Begium") but it's not mean I will not cut this show. So, sorry Best Regard, Tuxedo, If I understand him correctly, he will cut his copy of my couch sawing illusion from his promo material however he will still continue to perform my routine and my 'signature' illusion even when he knows that I didn't give him any permission to use it in his show! Nice that he writes that it could be much worse since he didn't steal my entire vampire act and that a voice off credit should compensate for copying my illusion! what a gentleman (not!!!!) |

Rafael I think what he is saying is that when he performs the trick he would give you credit for being the inventor of the trick but he will not take the illusion out from his repertoire.
Now what could be the next step? |
