I didn't see a thread on this after searching so I figured I'd ask. I am reading the Henning biography and it's VERY well written! I re-watched his Magic Show DVD when the biography was talking about it and that was really pleasant to see the show while reading about it.
There are eight TV Specials if I read that right. I had a few tapes of them that my dad made way back when, but I no longer have a VCR and am not certain where the tapes are now anyway, and I certainly don't have all eight specials. Is there any way to see these specials? Does anyone have them that can share them? I was hoping the SAM video library would have them but they don't ... and I certainly hope that these specials are not doomed to just be forgotten and never seen again. So is there a way to see them? |

Youtube has the Copperfield specials, but only have bits and pieces of Doug's. I too would like to see them again.

There is a gentleman who sells dvd's of some of them. I can't think of the name right now.
Unfortunately, his early specials were in the era when Video tape machines were not that common. Copies exist but sometimes they are fourth or fifth generation and not that great of quality. I was trying to get a good copy from a guy on ebay who had first generation but he was scared of copyright problems. Richard

I've not heard about the book since I received an email
about it being released back in July. I was surprised no one else in the other forum knew about it either. Anywho...I had no doubt that it was a great book, after exchanging emails with the author. He gave me some great tips on some of the things I've been searching for as well. If you do a really good google search, I'm sure there are full TV specials online. I haven't looked for Doug's lately, but I did find many of the David's early specials. If I come across them, I'll send you a link.

Marshall, did your dad know Doug? I am thinking about him tonight because he use to do his television specials on Christmas. By the way, I loved the book and will have to read it again real soon as I am getting that feeling again on how much I miss him. I wish I knew him, he was such a great performer.

"The Magic Show" on DVD is only a hint of the original STAGE version at the Cort Theater in NYC (cast changes & musical numbers)---you'll note that a number of songs on the original soundtrack LP are not in the DVD show footage.
No longer have a VCR?--why not?---still very useful for me to watch all of the 100+ TV magic specials I recored from the early 1980's onward. You'll find bootleg copies of all of the Henning specials on the internet...but it's not for me to provide the seller's contact information. |

Am reading SPELLBOUND, the Doug Henning Story... and it is fabulous. I knew Doug well, and photographed most of his specials for him. Still photos, black and white... but I no longer have the negatives. The film often went to Genii magazine and/or Doug and I didn't get any of it back. Argghhhh....
I was in the front row of the live audience when the Tiger got loose backstage. We didn't know about it 'til after the show. The REAL FUN/THRILL was to join the cast after the show and watch it in a projection roome right after the show.

Got to see him at the Pantages back in 1980. All the energy, fun and animation you saw on tv was alive
and present every time he took the stage. Since then, I've seen them ALL, in Vegas, LA and NY. None of them had that spark, and true innocence of Doug Henning. That's why the "magic" seemed real, because he believed it was happening to him as well as the audience.
Nothing is truer than the incomprehensible, because the sum total of our knowledge consists of the fact that we know nothing. Our reality is an illusion. Thus illusion is reality-Punx

I too saw him at the Pantages in 1980. I went backstage, but they weren’t letting anyone see Doug. They wouldn’t even let Dai Vernon in to see him. We yelled at the poor security guard that this is the professor. I’m sure he had no idea who he was, but I’m certain is was eventually straighten out.

We reposted a great article from Tops magazine about Doug's 1975 hour long television special, "The World 0f Magic". I think most of you will recognize the author as well, its a fun trip down memory lane.

Jay Marshall picked him up at the airport and drove him to their place where he checked out the light bulb cabinet. which according to my dad was the best one he ever made and regrets ever selling it to him. They had tea they talked and wanted to by it. Uncle Jay drove him back to the airport and the rest is history. It was used in PR for Spellbound and was in a commerical promoting it as well. I have one photo thus far from when it was used. It was suppose to be in transition to "The Magic Show" but it was re-worked and I guess didn't make the final cut. I know that the year my mom was expecting me they were working in upstate NY and Doug gave them tickets to the Broadway show. In respect and frienship he visited them and saw them perform. I found letters in a stack my mom gave with a lot of things with all these things documented. Its an interesting part of a history of the LBC. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to track down the illusion. Which has been a goal of mind for the past 3 years. I understand it was used in a TV special that DC produced and Orson Wells performed. And at one point thought that DC had purchased it along with a various amount of items from DH show. However the irony is that when DH was retiring it was not on the list of illusions to be auctioned off. Actually the only LBC that was, was the first built for Reveen and it went for $10,000 as a collector's item. I'm in search of DH and Mark Wilson's since Mark doesn't remember who he sold his too.

Doug's TV specials are very special magic history and should be preserved no matter what the price. I have copies of a few of them. Some on VHS tape and some on DVD. Don't know how we'd do it, though.
