I was on a date several evenings ago with a particularly attractive woman and at some point the topic of magic came up. How, I'm not quite sure, because I usually at least make SOME effort not to chase them away on the first date. In any case, I answer a few questions about the kind of magic I do and look for any opportunity to change the subject because I figure what's coming next is a request to see something. Normally not a huge problem, but the restaurant we were at was particularly busy that evening--so much so that I suspect if I were to remove a deck of cards, serious injuries might have been in store.

But she doesn't ask to see anything. Instead, she says "How do you do the pick a card trick?"

God, that's a double-whammy right there! That's the "there's only one card trick" assumption right along side the request for secret knowledge. And right in the middle of a date that otherwise seemed to be going so well. Oy! So after fidgeting for a minute, trying to think of an answer, I just said "it depends on which one I'm doing, now where's the waitress, I need another glass of wine."

It just caught me completely off guard. If I'm performing, I'm prepared for all these sorts of questions and statements. I even have effects that are specifically designed to handle those situations. But when I'm just enjoying my pasta, I wasn't expecting that at all.

So what about the rest of you? Have you ever gotten any of "those" statements while NOT performing, and how did you handle it?

Last night, I dreamed I ate the world's largest marshmallow. When I woke up, the pillow was gone.

I just inform, when asked, by telling them, "Sorry, I can't answer that. I've taken
an oath, never to disclose."
(If they still badger me, for a answer, & sometimes they do, I stop, or walk away)

You're a magician, ok? You're on a date with an attractive woman, ok?

So how did you do that!?

I have ALWAYS (since I started in magic, at least) brought up the subject of magic on the first date, and usually do a trick or two. Married now, but I seem to remember doing Dr. Daley's last trick often and that usually sealed the deal for me. Seriously.

No - seriously.

My wife passed away a few years ago. Now I have a fiance, and she loves my magic. She has an excellent ability at observation, and is quite difficult to fool.

Anyway, I told her about the time when my wife was alive where I had had her choose a card and sign it, then vanished it. A few days later, she found it inside our sealed utility bill that arrived in the mail.

My fiance has relived this incident in her mind (from my telling of the story) over and over as if she was actually there! To her it has become a reality, and she constantly asks me "How did the card get in side the electric bill? I want you to show ME that trick!"

Another one is when my wife and I were at a restaurant, and I "plucked" a real red rose out of the air while we were seated at our table and gave it to her.

You guessed it. I am barraged with requests by my fiance to do the same effect for her.

Just can't win for losing.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

I actually did a mentalism routine on my friend, and she was so impressed, it led to her becoming my wife Smile I will be releasing this effect, check out the discussion under Tricks & Effects. My philosophy is this: it's okay to do a magic trick on a first date, as long as you knock the socks off that person!
