I've gotten a few requests off another thread so I thought I would post this one as my first story:
The last day of Summer School, I tell my students if they show up on the last day then they need to get a life! Several of the worst students usually show up to try and get better grades even though doing the work would have resulted in a higher grade. I always bring a prop to play with since few students come through in the four-hours. One year I brought a VooDoo kit which was designed by a person I know who makes movie minatures. A student approached me and asked what grade I had given him. I told him a "D." He said, "Please Mr. Fox, give me a "B" so my parents will buy me a car." I let him know that he really deserved less than the "D" I gave him and showed him the grades I had given him on his projects and work. Finally, I said: "Let's let the bones decide your grade." I removed from the VooDoo kit real animal bones carved to look like little human child fingers and aged to look about a hundred-years-old. "If the bones tell me to give you a 'B' or even an 'A' then I will. "But if the bones support me by backing up the 'D' I gave you then you'll die!" I looked down at the bones and picked them up and put them into the aged box I carried them in. I chanted in a nonsense language and looked down as I shook the bones. When I looked up again a few seconds later, the student was gone |

In the mid-ninties, I had a student who kept bringing a "Walkman" to class and listening to the music instead of doing his work. I told him after many warnings that if he brought it one more time, something terrible would happen to him. When he brought his Electical device in the next day, I had prepared something for him. I told him that I was going to put a VooDoo curse on him so he could never get near his Walkman again. I let him know that I had done this to othe students who when they would get anywhere near a Walkman would throw-up meals from weeks ago along with whatever they had currently eaten. I took out a Shaman head dress, a Fukai VooDoo Doll, and a rubber chicken. I waved the chicken over the doll and chanted. I let the student know that he would begin to feel an intense burning sensation in his stomach. The doll began to wiggle and stand up when the student screamed, "Stop, Mr Fox!" I slowly let the doll go to rest and let the student know he was a very lucky person. He never brought the Walkman back to class.

Your student's refusal to follow school/class rules gives you absolutely no right whatsoever to treat/threaten a student. If the initial poor judgement on your part wasn't enough then continuing on after he clearly asked you to stop just takes the cake. If you were to try this today you'd be suspended and likely fired. Sounds like you were the "lucky" person and your students, not so much. jeff |

Jeff, I think you are reacting a bit too strongly. "Abuse" is hardly an apt term, and the abuse would seem to be on the part of the student who refused to abide by the rules. Abiding by rules is an important skill to develop during one's education unless one plans to belong to the criminal class and waste life away in prison. I think Mr. Fox got his message across quite effectively and that the student probably learned a much-needed lesson. Education today is largely a joke if the ability to effectively use the English language as seen here and elsewhere on the internet is any criterion. We seem to have lost the ability to use the past tense as well as the ability to spell correctly or to construct a meaningful and coherent sentence. In order to teach, one has to first gain the attention of the student, which Mr. Fox succeeded in doing. How that can be construed as abuse is beyond my understanding. Besides, it was an interesting and humorous story.

I think that these are interesting and humorous stories. I also feel somewhat uncomfortable with the behavior. I also have to say that when my daughter is older if a teacher treats her like that, regardless of her behavior, we would have a major problem.
I'm not saying that either of these situations would constitute abuse, but I'm not sure that they wouldn't either. Imagine if the students truly believed that these things would occur, how terrified would that be. How different would that be from taking out an unloaded gun and saying it was loaded and that if the student didn't do what you said you would shoot them? that would be abuse.

We are talking about Inner-City at-risk students who are used to not following the rules and have been allowed to get away with it. Conventional forms of communication don't work and administrators are reluctant to suspend or enforce the rules. Therefore using different and more extreme forms of communication have been helpful for me in getting my point across. True, this would not be necessary in 'Burb' schools.

My experience with teaching was at the other extreme. I taught (for a pittance) junior high classes in another country at a private school for extremely wealthy kids. There were effectively only two social classes there, the very rich and the abjectly poor. The students (except for the few poor ones who were there on a scholarship) were coddled and allowed to get away with just about anything. I had a couple of kids set off firecrackers in the classroom. In this incident and others the director of the school rewarded the students instead of punishing them for their behavior. On more than one occasion she directly countermanded my attempts at disciplining the students for disruptive behavior, and she rewarded them with new privileges. Of course, the kids on scholarship got all the blame and were frequently punished for infractions of the others. I would love to have been able to use some of Dennfox' tactics, but I would have been fired immediately.
