That's funny because a loooong time ago, I bought a couple of miter clamps that are reverse threaded. Although I have others now, I still have those "southern hemisphere" types, and still use them, and believe it or not, I'm always trying to turn the normal ones the wrong way!

Well, I just ordered a bunch of clamps from HF today, Their 7" wood handscrews are pretty nice for four bucks each. The long reach makes them useful for setting up jigs on the drill press. Cant have too many clamps in a wood shop.

I buy claps of one configuration or another just about every visit to HF! I agree, NEVER have to many clamps!

Wow!!! I was able to get my shop up to a wopping 46 degrees today. I feel like a cabinet maker in colonial times only with electricity for the tools. Its gotta warm up soon so I can do some painting.
Has anybody used one of those inexpensive spindle sanders from HF??? I need something like that in my shop. Hope things are going good for everybody! I know its like this almost all over the USA.

My garage is not heated unless I open the door to the den, which I don't to keep sawdust, etc. out. It's cold out there, and painting is difficult. I bring the spray cans and the work piece into a heated area to get the temp up, then cart it to the garage and spray a thin coat and quickly take everything back to a warmer spot. Slow going right now.
Long ago, I helped a guy do some repair painting on a car, outside, in the dead of winter. He used a heat lamp to warm the area of the fender to be sprayed, and the paint was kept inside until time to paint. Work quickly with thin coats and you may be ok. I do not know what will happen with other finishes. I have to Tung Oil some pieces here soon. That may be a whole different outcome.

It was 2 degrees in the shop yesterday morning. I have no insulation so when it gets that cold heating is just a waste of kerosene.I have my finish shop in one end of the house. By the time my wife gets home from work my space will have expanded to include a place to assemble everything in the heat.

Im headed out there now to fire it up. Fortunately the sun is out today but they say we're now in for some freezing rain and snow starting later this afternoon. Amazing weather so far.

We are supposed to get snow here today too, but so far not enough to make a snow cone with. I think it's all part of the "Great annual southern milk and bread buy-out". (Most non-southerers won't understand that one!)
Much, much colder this weekend. Maybe time to lower the sails for a few days, and just ride this stuff out.

Michael I always watch Birmingham on the Weather Channel since I know that you're over there building magic too. It looked like you would be in the center of it starting around midnight.
Today I got it up to 54 in the shop and drilled a bunch of holes. I got so dusty yesterday I had to do a drastic cleanup. I built the shop to take advantage of the normally warmer weather with half the shop with no walls on three sides. I did wrap it in heavy plastic when this started but once I get some good weather and I get caught up in the shop I may have to do some re-engineering. Maybe this is the last hurrah before the big global warm up and I can enjoy the open air shop for a few years.

Today, I opted for working in the kitchen applying decals. Many more to do, so I'll likely be staying warm this weekend.

That was smart. I want a wood stove like I had in the shop in Tennessee. Maybe next winter.

I think I remember seeing a photo of you once that looked like you were standing near a woodpile a mile high. Are you sure you want to devote that much time to making firewood?

Picked up a WORKING heater today and for as small as it is it provides a nice warm breeze! It's actually more of a directional thing than a whole shop heater but having it 6-8 feet behind me when I'm at the lathe makes a difference!
I'm in central California so although we have nothing like the winters you guys describe, we have the famous Tule fog and a wet cold that sinks to the bone! The upside to my local is that I get 9.5 months of pleasant to down right HOT weather so even if I opted to take a break in the winter it ain't that long! Any of you guys ever mess with Mora wood? I got a hold of a 4X4X12 inch hunk and chucked up a 1/3 of it today to turn a lidded box and it's nice stuff! Turns easily for a semi hard tight wood and has a beautiful grain similar to Zebra wood! I'm seeing a nice chop chalice and maybe a Okito box coming outta the remainder! MMc |

I have a wood burner but no time to get wood for it. I kick on a torpedo heater every now and then just so I can thaw out my fingers. I changed some of my hanging bulbs to heat lamps to try to keep my glue from freezing.

Michael, Ill have to find that picture with the woodpile. Used to enjoy splitting wood and finding walnut, cherry and poplar to turn wands and other stuff from from my wood lot. I think you benefitted from a chunk of that home grown walnut at one turn and sent me a nice wand which I cherish for sure. I don't think its going to ever get cold again after this. Im sure global warming will kick in soon!!!!
It definately sounds like it gets super cold in Springfield MO, Gimpy, and Mickey, glad you got the working heater to warm your back. I spent a good part of yesterday sitting by my propane heater wishing I was warm. Ray, at least you folks in PA have seen all this before. The average temp down here where I am is usually in the 60s. I don't think it froze last year but a couple of times.
