Interesting. The woodman has evolved over the years. It's an ancient craft and honest work as long as the wood is good and the count fair. Three ricks will fit in the back of a full sized pickup bed. A good woodman will bring his son or grandson and stack the wood for you in TN. In south GA, you buy firewood in bundles and stacks.

Sorry I've been a little scarce lately. With that said, I wanted to stop by to wish a very Merry Christmas and general winter holiday season to all my friends here at The Workshop. Ya'll have brought much more into my life than I'll never be able to repay and even though Thanksgiving has passed, I am still thankful. Have a great one and I hope to see you all back here next year.

Thank you Tabman......sometimes things align inspite of my getting in the way.

Southwest Utah has been very plesant the past couple of days, have not needed the shop heater, but the weather guesser says we are headed to a high of 32 buy the end of the week. Nice white dusting in the hills, looks purdy. Been finishing up my first 4 string Dulcimer from a kit. Ordered some nice birdseye maple and cherry to start one from scratch. Hard to find hardwoods in this little burg, makes a good excuse to run to Las Vegas. Anyone know of a source for hardwood veneers with out a core or bond?

What veneer are you looking for?? Sizes??? Should be available over the internet from a number of sources. I'm stuck inside at home for the next few days at least and Ive got time to search it out if you need some help sourcing. Let me know.

Speaking of dulcimers, I scratch built them in the 60s using some 1/8" poplar my dad found for me. Daddy was a hardware salesman after his ww2 Navy pilot gig ran out and he traveled the south to hardware stores and lumber companies. He came from that great generation who could do just about anything with their hands, born in the depression and prevailing in the 1940s. I'm really in awe of these people. Dad was killed in a plane crash in the 1970s but I learned an incredible amount of wood and hardware lore from him as well as flying, boating, living, loving, learning, loyalty to friends and family, and moonshine too.

Finally, I hope everybody here at The workshop has the best year ever coming up in 2011. My best wishes to you all.

Lets hear it for Naval Aviation! And all the flyboys I fixed the birds for, so they could punch holes in the sky. Good life for me for 20 years, until my gig ran out also.

Great Grandpa Black had a still out back, Grandma got to see it on a news reel in town at the movies after the bust. Caused a bit of embarresment.

Looking fer 1/8"x6 to 12"x30" to ?? walnut, cherry, maple.....anything good for the soundboard. Already have fret boards and braces. Did find some on ebay and an Alaskan company. Thanks for the help Tabman.

Excellent site! I see some exotic dulcimers in the very near future! Maybe some special SC or other boxs!

I worked on A-4 Skyhawk, A-7E Corsair II, F-14 TomCat, FA-18 Hornet, P-3C Orion. Worked on and was Flight Engineer/Crew Chief/Load Master on C-131 Convair Sameritian. My bird, 999, was delivered to the navy on the very day of my birth. Hard to explain how to get attached to a particular big old twin engine, but of the three in the squadron, triple Niner was always a pleasure to prep and fly. Never had a problem with her. But I ramble......back to the future....

You could make a dulcimer out of very thin veneer and float it to a recording of dulcimer music. It could be quite beautiful.

That is a very interesting avenue of thought and worth taking a stroll down. the zebra wood would lend itself to this I think......

This is the place near me.

I was there today picking up some Baltic Birch Ply and noticed the veneers. They had tons of it... the super thin stuff. Not cheap, but good quality from what I noticed.

That store looks really good, Michael. That's very cool that you have a local source for nice materials and tools. I'm going to give them an online order and give them a try.

Also, happy new year and many more!!!

I discovered this place on a visit to the family a few years ago. Since then, I would stock up when I'd come up here (maybe twice a year), and haul a load of wood home. I'd get Baltic Birch Ply in all kinds of sizes and sometimes pick up any good hardwoods, if they had something interesting, or a sale going.

Well now, I don't have to make a 1300 mile round trip. It's only about 10 miles down the road! Smile

I haven't bought any tools or hardware from them yet, but since I occassionally order from Rockler, this should come in handy and maybe save a bit by not having to pay shipping charges.

Happy New Year to you, too!!
