I've been planning to purchase a good vanishing and appearing cane (ideally black), however from my research, it seems the best ones are no longer being produced.
So far the ones on Hank Lees are the best I've come across, but I'd like to hear from owners: 1. What's the general quality like? 2. Do they need oiling? 3. What colour did you receive? 4. In the case of the appearing cane, is the safety secure? (is there any chance of it appearing prematurely?). If anyone else can recommend a better metal vanishing and appearing cane that're still being produced today, any suggestions are appreciated Thanks |

These questions are best sent in an Email to Hank Lee. He does reply to requests.
I suggest this as there are a lot of different models on the market by different manufacturers. Even dealers do not stick with the same product. They are always switching. Hank Lee is only a dealer, he does not make the products, except for his own special brand of children effects. The best currently that does not require oil and is black is the one made by/or imported by Empire Magic. Very good cane for the money. You can purchase it at http://www.stoners.com |

I was thinking of emailing Hank, but I thought I'd ask on the Café first in the hope of finding someone who's been using the canes over several years. Maybe I'll let this thread run for a few days to get everyone view and then figure out my email.
Thanks for the suggestion of the Ultimate canes, they may be a better option for me, and from the pics look very nice . Out of interest how do you think a nice oiled cane would compare to one of the ultimates, and do you know how good the safety is for the appearing ones? Sorry for my ignorance - currently I don't have much experience with canes, so I'm afraid that after I make a purchase I'll find out I would have been far better off getting a different make or model. |

The appearing cane from SEO are good as they are original Mahka Tendo. They do not have a vanishing cane listed in the same materials.
Harrakan were the best if you can find them and they do match. WM makes good points about dealers switching suppliers. Sometimes it is availability other times it is price. That is why it is so important to have a dealer you know and trust. I am not familiar with the Empire cane. But I trust Wm's. assessment. Stay away from the silver Indian canes. While they work ok, they just don't look right. Richard

Okay, the only canes I know that used oil is the original Russ Walsh Canes and the older German Canes, as far as I know neither available any longer. The oil is a pain, to store oil, to use wipe and wipe and wipe off the oil. During performance they get oil all over you hands, even with a good wiping.
The cane I suggested uses the famous Japanese spring loaded release catch. Very nice feature. As for safety, you have to be careful, you have a device shooting at a high rate of speed, don't point it at anyone, read the instructions before handling. Safety 1st! Byers remorse is always an issue, I would not suggest this model if I did not handle it myself and check out the workmanship. I own 6 metal canes currently, and can tell you, you do not want the Indian models from India. They can cut your hands just by handling them. The metal is thinner, thus act like a knife and kink and bend if handled improperly. This I have found out through many hours of handling the props. The appearing cane is the safer of the 2, meaning the vanishing cane is more difficult to operate. I only use the vanishing cane in the newspaper vanish, just because of that fact. |

Thanks very much for the help, and from the current information it seems the Ultimate canes are my best bet.
I heard someone else on the Café mention that metal appearing canes could be used as a weapon, so I'll make sure to take that into account every time I use one. During the vanishing cane I'll be wearing gloves with some extra padding, otherwise I don't think it would be worth the risk using, since getting cut hands during a show could really mess things up. Thanks again! |

If you are using gloves (especially white colored ones) I would suggest you stay away from oiled canes. I personally would not use an oiled one. They are too much hassle and messy for me. I have a Mahco Tendo appearing cane, and I love it. I wish he had made the vanishing canes, but he didn't. SEO has Tendo canes.

Padding will not help much when it comes to Vanishing Canes. I have tried this an they cut through the material. It is all in the handling of the cane and the way you cup your fingers in a cone shape, if you are off in that finger model, it will hurt. I have even tried the half release method and it still hurts.
Now that I am getting older, my skin is getting thinner. Just a month ago I was working with the visual vanish and cut a good one. Keep some 'New Skin' Liquid bandage available while practicing. It comes in handy. |

Mahka did make the vanishing canes but the paint was always chipping off so he discontinued them.
On the vanishing cane, I was taught to thumb palm the ferrule on the inside of the hand. This allows the cane to collapse into the the thicker tougher part of your hand. It also allows the cane to be hidden within the palm. Richard

I would not call the Appearing Cane a weapon, but it can send you or someone to the emergency room if improperly handled. I like the catch in the middle of the cane production, very magical and fun to perform. It also can get you remodeling your home or apartment. Spackle is the best to fill in the dents in the ceiling and walls.
By the way, this equipment is not an out of the box instant use item. It must be studied, practiced and rehearsed properly before presenting to any audience. |

Sounds like the vanishing canes can be nastier than I expected. Even once I get the technique down to avoid cuts, I think I'll also keep a few bandaids in my case to be on the safe side. Hopefully I won't have to spill too much blood before I'm ready to put it into a show
Regan: Thanks for the advice on the gloves |

I have two Fantasio plastic vanishing canes that work very well. Very safe, fast and effective. What's wrong with plastic?????|

Plastic does not have the snap that the metal does. If you load the inside of the cane to full, (ie, 12 bloom bouquet like I do), it cannot handle it.
It works well for certain things and if you maintain them as Fantasio suggests. Paul Diamond always did the best demo of the triple color changing canes. So many other guys just could not do it. Richard
